My family and I are putting our dog, Dusty, down today. The appt. is at 4:30. Prayers requested please. My father is retired and Dusty has kept him company during the days for the last 5+ years.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I assume the dog's health is failing? Such a hard thing to do, even when you know it's the right thing.

Yes, he had cancer and one of the tumors was pushing on his stomach. He hadn't eaten since the weekend. He went peacefully, except for the few barks he yelped when the needle went in. We all lost it then. I can't write anymore because I am starting to cry. Thanks to all who sent prayers.

My prayers are with you and your family.
I know what you are going through.
We had Roxanne put to sleep 3 years ago.
I held her in my arms when the vet gave her the shot.
She wasn't afraid and went peacefully.
The loss of a Family Member is Always Tough.
When you are ready for another Addition to your family, PLEASE give a SHELTER a try.
There is a LOT of LOVE left in them and THEY DESERVE a SECOND CHANCE.
Take Care and May God Bless.

We got Dusty from a shelter so there is no reason to think my parents wouldn't try it again when they are ready.

I hope you and your family are doing well, all things considered, and hope that Dusty is somewhere better. People who never had an animal in the family will never understand the pain from the loss that you just experienced, but we do here. Please accept my condolences.

I'm SO sorry to hear that! My 73-year-old father had a Scottish Terrier for less than 18 months. She was the love of his life, and when they got her, he said "this dog will outlive me", and that saddened me terribly. She became sick the day after Christmas, and on January 4, 2005 we had to have her put down due to doggie Leukemia. He couldn't bear it, so Mom and I had to do it and was awful. Dad said "I took her for her last walk and said goodbye", and that tore me up. I had never seen him cry before that. I'm crying now just thinking about it. But...the vet was absolutely wonderful.

He went without a dog for some time, and they just got a Westie recently who is all puppy with a ton of attitude. I'm just glad to see him mad at a dog again.

Just remember, we take far better care of our animals than we do our humans!

God bless you, and your Dad.

So sorry you had to make that tough call. But I know you did what was best for your friend. That's all we can do. It's okay. All we can do is care for them.

I feel for you, too, and said a prayer. (Not that I have much pull in those quarters...)

We had to send Paintbrush, our 17-year-old kitty, to the Rainbow Bridge on April 1. She had been failing since November, but a few days before we took her we noticed her appetite was falling off and she was starting to retain a little fluid. She went very peacefully.

This is compounded by the fact that my 99-year-old mother is in the hospital, and her congestive heart failure is finally getting beyond what her pacemaker can do. She will be released to a nursing home on Monday, and will probably be on hospice care there. All we can do to help her is make sure she's comfortable and well cared for until God calls her. She's well within her right mind and ready. I am learning much from her that I can use when it's my time.

    Pray for us.

I had to put down my old friend Amber two weeks ago. She was a beautiful Golden Retriever with the sweetest personality. She was almost 16, arthritis was severly limiting her mobility and quality of life. She had been deaf and "legally blind" for about 4 years. She went very peacefully. I watched her get born, picked her out of the whole litter and I was there when she left. I'll get another dog eventually but not for a while. That is to say, I'll make another friend, but she'll never be replaced. It's always a painful loss to say goodbye to an old, good friend. You have my sincere best wishes.

    Prayers on the way up.

It is a terrible task but a humane one. When the joy is gone and nothing but pain and suffering is left it would be selfish to prolong it. Being there with Dusty is an honorable and courageous act. To be among loved ones as we slip away is the best we can hope for. The pain in your heart reflects the amount of love you had for Dusty. The pain will fade and the happy memories will live on.

    God Bless

kswiss and everyone else who has suffered this terrible turn of events.........

I am so sorry. This has to be the hardest thing we as humans go through because we are responsible for these souls. We have to make the choice to end their lives.

The 2 cats I have had to put down I was inconsolable. I felt guilt, I felt such loss.

My thoughts and prayers go to each of you on the losses of your dear furry friends. My hopes are that when you are ready that you will again open up your hearts and adopt again. It was the right thing for me to do, and I am grateful to have 2 fur kids at my house. Thye make a house a home.

Amber was prematurely grey :) She was blonde to begin with and started getting white on her face when she was 4. By the time she was seven she had a full white face. This pic was from last October.

    Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

You have my deepest condolences on your loss. I found this on the German Shepherd Forum. I hope it helps bud.

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done
For this, the last battle, can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand
Don't let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day more than the rest
Your love and friendship stand the test.

We've had so many happy years
What is to come can hold no fears,
You'd not want me to suffer, so
When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend
Only, Stay with me to the end,
and hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know, in time you will see
It is a kindness you do to me,
Although my tail its last was waved
From the pain and suffering I've been saved.

Don't grieve it should be you
Who decides this thing to do,
We've been so close, we two, these years
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Smile, for we walked together for a little while.....
