Eveleth (MN) man charged with assault, beating puppy

Griffin, a Shih Tzu-poodle mix, is recovering with a foster family after being beaten.

An Eveleth man was charged Tuesday with domestic assault and animal cruelty among other crimes after police executed a search warrant and found a puppy that had been beaten and was too weak to stand.
A witness said Joshua Ray Gordon had attempted to flush the dog down the toilet.

Gordon, 18, was arrested Thursday at his home in the 600 block of Douglas Avenue in Eveleth. Officers executing a search warrant found 161 grams of marijuana, $2,300 in cash and a stun gun. He is accused of selling marijuana from his residence, which is less than one block away from the Hippodrome, a sports facility used by local schools.

He also is accused of assaulting a female companion the day before the search.

All told, Gordon was charged with four crimes: sale of marijuana in the fourth degree (school zone); felony domestic assault; torture or cruelty to a pet or companion animal; and possession of a stun gun by a felon.

Eveleth Police Chief Brian Lillis took the Shih Tzu-poodle mix to the Northland Animal Hospital in Virginia, where it received emergency care for head trauma and dehydration.

“He was too weak to stand or walk,” said Abby Pontinen, the Northland veterinarian on call at the time.

But the dog, named Griffin, rallied and has been placed with a foster family, Pontinen said. She said Griffin still is showing signs of sight loss but may recover.

Turnabout is fair play. How about we beat him over the head and try to flush him down the toilet? :dunno: :whistling:

I can, often, understand how people can commit some pretty off the wall crimes. I don't condone it but, I can, sorta, understand it.

I can't fathom how someone can mistreat, intentionally, an animal. It just doesn't compute.

Frankly, I can only suppose it's some sort of deep seeded psychological disorder.

Ok, fine. We'll compromise. We'll snake the tow cable from my truck through the toilet, then put it around his neck and pull him through the toilet. Everybody gets what they want.

I have a k-9 dog that would like to say something for picking on one of his little buddies. If this dog goes up for adoption, I want him.

All I need to make this right is a blow torch, an ice pic and some muratic acid.

Some folks just seem to need someone, some animal, or something to "hold power over" in order to not feel so at the "bottom of the heap".

Thing is, they just don't get it. They'll ALWAYS be at the bottom of the heap, IMO.

Too bad animal cruelty is only a misdemeanor in most places. Deserves a lot more.

I'll wager my $GT, with 5:1 odds, his "female companion" turned him in.
