Another thread reminded me about the strange ads some older rock and punk stars have done. I think these were only aired in the UK so they deserved a thread. Iggy Pop selling car insurance is something I never thought I'd see. At least Lemmy shilled for beer.

Johnny Lydon has been claiming he is scamming you for money since the 70's.

Well not directly, I could have #$%^ a brick the first time I heard them use Lust for life in one of their ads. I guess they (correctly figured) not many people know all the words.

Why not? Two things are happening here.

    1. The butter folks (or car insurance folks) want to sell more butter (or cars), and they attempt to use names/faces of folks they think will be either witty, funny, resonant, trustworthy, or some combination of these things.

    2. Iggy Pop made a name for himself starting in the 60s, and probably peaking in the late 70s - early 80s, with a resurgence in the 90s and with the reunion earlier this century. There are two things all entertainers crave - attention, and money. Doing an advertisement as this puts his mug "out there" and gets him much needed cash (no matter what MOST of them tell you, MOST OF THEM ARE HURTING FOR MONEY).

It's hard being an attention whore (pop artist) in your declining years. It's hard to stay relevant gyrating your hips when you might be already considering hip replacement. It's especially demoralizing when young hot chics and finely chiseled young men have NO IDEA who you are and why you should be relevant in their lives.

Thus, the ads. For another stab at the fame comet, and to inject some green in the blood stream.

Fine, be rational. My angst-ridden inner teenager is horrified at someone like Iggy Pop selling the World's Most Boring product. :miff:

I would also never have expected the guitarist from Queen getting a PhD in astrophysics and appearing on The Sky at Night, a TV show about astronomy.
