I was about to put on a set of Talon granular grips on my G19.4 and I stopped before I removed the backing. I realized the grips are designed for applying to the stock Glock grip. I use the large beavertail on my 19 because that’s what makes my 19 comfortable, and I’m not about to do without it. If I put the Talon grip over the beavertail, (1) it might not fit right, and (2) I’d run into a big problem if I needed to remove the beavertail for a detail strip or something.
Am I missing something? What are my options? What if I just cut the Talon grip so the backstrap part is separate?

On my 19.4 I applied it over the large back strap, the carefully traced the outline of the back strap with a shap knife. No problems.

The problem is with the sticky grip. It's probably best to stipple it. When you really need it, you don't want it to be slippery. Those sticky grips will fall off.

So you cut the Talon grip into three separate pieces? Is that what you did?

I didn’t get the sticky grips, I got the granular ones.

I picked up traction grips - the back piece is separate.

Does the talon grip cover the tmh pin on the back, is that what you're worried about as far as detail stripping?

No, that’s not what concerns me. My concern is that the Talon grip is made in one continuous piece...the two sides and the backstrap in the middle. That would be fine if I shot my 19.4 with the stock grip without a backstrap or beavertail added onto the stock grip. The problem is that my 19 fits my hand best when I have the large beavertail pinned onto the grip. With the Talon granular grip covering the sides and the beavertail, that would make the beavertail impossible to remove in case of a detail strip. It’s becoming clear to me I need to cut the Talon grip material into three separate pieces. Unless there’s some other option...???

Check and see if the Talon Grips are not offered in sizes to fit the Gen4 guns specifically for the back strap used (or no back strap). Not a one size fits all if memory serves me.

Order the correct grip wrap. Talon makes Gen 4 wraps for no backstrap, medium backstrap, and large bsckstrap.

I don't use the backstraps, so I'm not ruling out that I'm missing something, but it doesn't appear to me that you need to remove them to detail strip the gun.

Oh crap. I just took a look at the packaging on my Talon grip set. It’s for Gen 1, 2, 3. My Glock 19 is Gen 4. I don’t know how that happened; obviously I ordered the wrong one. Crap. Oh well.

To remove the trigger group the pin that holds it in needs to come out. That’s the pin that holds the backstrap/beavertail onto the back of the grip. So with the pin removed, the backstrap/beavertail sort of falls off. Seems like the beavertail that I like should have its own piece of Talon grip material. Maybe if I buy the right one, a separate piece will come with it.

@azks804 - thanks for the info. Having never used the back straps I was unaware they came off like that. I assumed the slot/ridge kept them in place.

Yeah, they fit nicely but beavertails are pinned into place with the same pin that holds the trigger group. Ah well, guess I was careless when I ordered the grip tape. On the other hand, I found out that MidwayUSA sure gives great service and fast shipping!!!
