Sorry if this an obvious (stupid) question...but,

I've always wondered in states that allow private party firearms transactions (FTF) without going through a DROS transfer, do you have to be a resident of the state that the sale took place?

Example..can a California resident, where all sales have to go through a dealer, visit a state that allows private party sales, and buy a handgun from someone face to face? Anyone have any wisdom to share?

Something tells me that this is illegal.

    two points:

You can not legally buy a handgun FTF if you and the seller do not reside in the same state.

But even if you can, it is still illegal to bring a firearm (bought from another state) across state lines without it going through an FFL.

So to answer your question, it is possible to do so, but it is unlawful.
