So I got a glock 23, and I'm getting some different carry rounds to test out and get a feel for. I reviewed the FBI's test results for some rounds, if anyones actually interested Ill try to relocate the article. But my considerations after the review came to these after considering overall velocity, penetration and expansion(the obvious ones).

    -Federal Premium Tactical 180gr HST/JHP

    -Barnes 140gr TAC-XPD HP

-Winchester Supreme Elite 165gr Bonded PDX

    -Federal Premium LE 165gr HST/JHP

    -Winchester Ranger Talon 180gr HP

These rounds averaged 12-19 inches penetration (Through double denim I believe then ballistics gel), .68" through .74" expansion, and 983 through 1118 for velocity. Im curious to see anyones experience with these rounds, brands, or their own preference and why.

I’m a 180 gr HST, Gold Dot, or Ranger guy myself.

I like heavy-for caliber bullets. Greater mass, more sexual density.

I can not understand the "Trashing" of the .40 S&W. It is not my first choice. But I have fired many .40 rounds and handloads. The .40 S&W is a fine cartridge chambered in many excellent handguns.
I prefer the 10MM but who knows what I will like next year? :drillsgt:

I grabbed up a few boxes at a local place and I believe federal premium 180 hst's were one of the sd's I grabbed... I am very interested in trying out the barnes and the ranger talons...

View attachment 440476 The Ranger was my goto for 10 years, but it’s hard to find now, so it’s the Speer GD. I save the 180 gr. stuff for the 40’s parents - the 10mm.

I load Winchester Silvertip 155 grain HPs owing to Mas Ayoob's recommendation. Alternatively, I'd be fine with 165 grain Speer Gold Dots.

Winchester White Box 180gr jhp. Shoots smoothly, accurately, and cheaply out of my g22. Decent expansion in 1 gallon water jugs.

I like the S&W .40 and yes people do trash it but everyone have their opinion so I just keep my .40 and keep on going.

180 HST or Winchester 180 bonded. Both are solid performers.

For many years I preferred the medium weight 155-165 grain rounds. I finally tried the 180 grain HSTs and found I preferred the recoil impulse in my G27. Everyone perceives recoil differently. My advice is compare a few loads back to back and see if your follow up shots are easier/quicker with one vs the other.

Picking Gold Dot or HST is rarely a bad choice regardless of weight.

Another fan of 180 HST, though I did wind up with a case in an amazing trade deal.
