This has probably been asked 10,000 times before, but I'll go ahead and ask anyway.

Looking for opinions as to what you all think is the best powder for .308 Win. I keep hearing either Varget or IMR 4064.

    What do you all think??

I've had excellent results with Varget and IMR 4320. Haven't tried 4064.

That's for my bolt gun. In my M1A, the gas system likes something that burns a little faster. I use IMR 4895 for those. It seems the slower powders tend to batter it more than necessary.

Across the board, I like Varget the best for .223, .308 and some .30-06. Not the best metering powder, but fairly clean, good velocity and like many powders from Hodgdon, not very temperature sensitive.

FOr accuracy loads, tough to beat 4895, but really, most of the med burners, like 4064, RL15, VV14 & VV150, W748, Varget, all will wrok well. Your rifle will tell you which one. There are no universally accurate loads. My M700 did NOT care much for Varget, but mnay swear by it. We are only talking accuracy diff of maybe 1/4" @ 100yds, but still, your rifle will tell you.

H-4895; W-748 and H-335 have worked well for me, in 7.62x51mm/.308.

The few folks around here that do not use Varget (which, most do) use Re 15.

I use Varget and I get good results. I have some 748 that I've been meaning to try, just haven't gotten around to it.

I buy H4895 by the 8# jugs for my 308 AR10 and 30/06 Garand loads.

Thanks guys! From all I heard, it seems that Varget comes at the top of most people's list. So, I guess that I will start with that and see the results I get. I want to work out a good load for my FNAR.

RL-15 and TAC but I also grab 4064, Varget and Benchmark when the price is right.

In 1995 I bought a Rem. 700 VS-SF in .308 Winchester. Using WW-748 and 150-165/168 gr. bullets I routinely obtained .78 MOA using good handloading techniques and firing from a solid benchrest. Best groups ran .50 for five groups of five shots each. Ten shot groups ran 1.0 inches or less. At 400 yds., groups ran hardly over 3 inches for 10 shots. HTH. Sincerely. Brucev.

I may be bucking the trend, but I have used Accurate #2520 since it came out years ago. The 101 yd group shown is typical for my Browning A-Bolt II Heavy Barrel with the B.O.S.S. and the 168 SMK.

Made for the 308, it has always given me better consistency than any powder I have used.

Dense and clean burning, it has given me gilt edged accuracy in any 308 or 7.62 I have shot it in.

Great in gas autos, and I honestly don't experiment with other powders. I have used Varget, and RL-15, but they don't seem to measure up to 2520. I will gladly give up a few FPS to get sub .5 MOA groups in every scoped rifle I have tried with it.

44.7 gr with commercial brass and the 168, 42.5 gr with Military brass. COAL, 2.79"-2.81", depending on magazine length.

1-10" twist guns I have like the 170 gr Lapua Scenar over the 168 SMK that rules in 12" twist guns.

I don't doubt you regarding the 2520, but as long as we're showing pics,

100 yard, 5-shot group with Varget and a 168 grain AMAX bullet:

Reloader 15 has worked best for me in .308, Varget in .223.

Are you using a powder measure?

I like Varget for true handloading, but the powder measures don't like the large granules of extruded powder much. Hodgdon 335, Reloader 15, and Ramshot TAC run better through the powder measure.
