Just started reloading and I'm using a Lyman tmag turret press with the powder charger in the turret. My first 38 loads are 158 grain lead bullets over 4.0 grains of Unique. I'm concerned because when I check my powder dumps I see deviation from throw to throw of 1/10th of a grain. 4.0 4.0 4.1 3.9 etc. I know I'm still in safe territory but how normal is a tenth difference in dumps. I'm using a digital scale and occasionally rezeroing the scale

If you consistently get only a tenth of a grain variance with Unique you need to rush out and buy a lottery ticket... you're a very lucky individual.

Unless you're already loading over max you, nor your gun will ever notice a 1 or 2 tenth grain difference with Unique.

I was concerned because of the change. I'm a novice at this point so I'm vague on things. I fired Ny first 50 rounds today. All the brass looks good and the rounds seem consistant. Powder puff load though. Especially through a gp100

Unique is not the best powder for light loads, you'll get a lot of unburned powder. It shines with mid-range up to slightly below max loads. There are better powders for max.

My first press was a Lyman T-mag II turret press.
But I used a Rcbs 1500 ChargeMaster and a Lee powder through die.
The ChargeMaster threw Unique perfect on every charge.

Unique and lead bullets in a wheel gun. You have to give it to the OP, he has excellent taste.

Compare and contrast this to the other thread with the OP who just started out.

OP, you'll need to use copious amounts of 2400 with that same bullet in 357 mag to not feel like you are shooting creampuffs out of that GP100. 5.4 Unique is the max +P load for that bullet in the Speer manual. It is also listed online at Alliant's website so you can verify it. If/when you are looking to step things up a bit, it's a great load. It duplicates the +P factory 158LSWCHP and is still and easy shooter in that gun.

Only getting a .1 variance with Unique shows that the OP is watching what he's doing very carefully & being very consistant.

    GOOD SHOW !

+- 0.1 is about how accurate most loading scales are.

One tenth of a grain variance with flake powders (Unique is a flake powder) is acceptable, almost expected. Same with extruded (rod) powders, which get cut in a lot of powder measures. Ball powders will give you the most consistent thrown charges.

If a ball powder was varying 0.1gr, I'd be upset. With Unique though, not a problem.

How would you know since it only measures as small as 0.1gr? I have a friend that bought some really high dollar scale, it measures to within 0.05gr, but cases vary more than that in volume, 0.1gr accuracy is plenty accurate.
FOr the OP, I appreciate your caution, but as everyone has noted, 0.1gr accuracy is completely acceptabl & with Unique, almost admirable that you can get that accuracy throwing charges.

Because it weight 4.0 grs as 4.0 grs EVERY time. It doesn't show it as 4.0, then 4.1, then 4.0, then 4.0. etc. It's nearly perfectly consistent.

By that logic, my broken bathroom scale is REALLY accurate. Things reads 132lbs EVERY TIME (and no matter what I put on it). Wow, now THATS accuracy!

Bathroom scales hold the weight for short period time so they look consistent. You get on and off 10 times and get the same number 10 times. Pick up the dog and get on the scale and you still get the same number.

Weigh yourself and take a shower. Then weigh yourself again. I've lost 5 pounds in the time it took to shower.

Got it. Mine is too. It needs about 1min to warm up on cold days & then it's dead on everytime. I just don't think it's more accurate than 0.1gr as that is all it will measure to.

Thank for everyones responses. I'm new to it all so I'm trying to be careful. I made another batch tonight. Stepped up to 4.3 of unique. Sometimes when making the powder dump its like I can feel the metering bar cut the grains. Ie slight resistance.

I said it was consistent. Not accurate. Two very different things. But overall I prefer consistency by far. I can adjust for some minor inaccuracies if I know about them.
