If you measure the angle (of elevation of the barrel) you can compute a rough estimate of the initial velocity using high-school physics.

Using an estimate of 45 degrees and ignoring air resistance, if it's really going 400 yards then you have to be cranking out at least 195 fps. 400fps sounds high but not ridiculously so.

    FYI - an average size spud is about 13oz. At 400fps, that's about 2,000 ft/lbs. of energy, about 550 more than a +P+ 44 magnum load with a 340g bullet.

    Hmm...new home defense gun??

Thats a serious potato gun. We used to make those quite a bit and go into the orange grove and shoot the oranges.

We also used to make what we called an air cannon, basically 8" pipe, with a chamber, the reducer back into another 8" piece. It didn't shoot anything but when ignited sounded like a damn sonic boom.

Seven second burst of Aqua Net. I'll have to post some close-up photos of the gun. 4" abs burn chamber, reverses into very long 2" barrel. I think the key to explosive burn is plenty of expansion chambers. Pistol grip and buttstock serve as expansion chambers for more complete burn. Report is a loud whoosh instead of the usual bang of typical guns.

My brother and his friend built one. With a little Axe, and a grill igniter modded into the combustion chamber, we can shoot a golf ball through a 3/8" piece of plywood. We also wrap the golf ball in a rag to seal off the barrel. It sounds like a 20 ga. and is pretty sweet.

Yeah, golf balls are the bomb. But you should see it launch a 2" ball hitch through a car door. Muzzle flip is unreal, and you have to aim 12" low at 10 feet.

This was the prototype. I showed it to a plumber, who was really into it, and he asked why I didn't use 6" ABS for the combustion chamber. I said, "they make 6 inch?" So now I have a pretty good idea what Potato Gun 2.0 is going to look like.
