I am SO GLAD I don't live in this city. What an absolute clusterfack.

http://www.oregonlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2016/12/steve_novicks_ceo_tax_wins_clo.html

In a move that's drawn international headlines, Portland will launch a first-of-its-kind tax on public companies that pay their chief executives vastly more than they pay an average worker.

The tax targets publicly traded companies whose chief executives report salaries at least 100 times higher than the salary of a median worker. Officials expect to raise $2.5 million a year starting in January 2018, with Novick hoping the money will help pay for homeless services.
And here I was thinking Democrats wanted to CREATE jobs.....

Novick said he also hopes the tax might discourage companies
Oh it will, Mr. Novick. It will.

Because nothing says "Fairness" like taxing people unfairly.

It;s not just California any more; it's the whole West Coast. How far up does the San Andreas fault run?

People, and companies, with money can move. Very easily. Ask NYS and NYC what happened when they enacted similar taxes over the past few years. The answer? Their revenues went down by half again as much as they expected to raise because all the people/corps they expected to tax simply moved to areas that wouldn't tax them.

It's very easy for a corporation to relocate its corporate HQ to another state simply by filing some paperwork. It's very easy for the CEO to to buy a condo or whatever in one of the seven states without income tax and register that as their permanent address. Liberals never learn.

I tell people at work, if a CEO makes enough money, he can live just as comfortably in Geneva, Hong Kong or Mexico City as in the US. So he has to pay more for land in Geneva or more for armed security in Mexico. He has it to pay.

The problem is that the media loves this idea, so when the city loses jobs and tax revenue goes down, they will cover it up.

Most companies know how to get around this.

My CEO had $10 Billion, and never once took a salary of more than $100K.

Another option is to fire all the low-end employees, and contract out whatever it was they did. You do not have to a finance wiz to figure out all the ways around this.

You left out Lausanne. Much nicer than Geneva.

And Canton de Vaud will negotiate tax rates. There is a reason why so many highly paid athletes and other live on the shores of Lac Léman.

But better yet for taxes...Kanton Schwyz. They will go to very low tax rates.

Funny thing about Switzerland is for high value individuals and companies they will negotiate income tax rates. The seem to think it is better to have a little bit of something than all of nothing.

I wonder if there is a correlation between that and why so much wealth is centered there?

Simply stunningly stupid and wildly socialist. What's next, a data base so that grocery stores can increase your bill while decreasing the bills of the "needy" ha ha, what a joke. Ever notice the obese slobs waving signs for more public assistance? They obviously don't miss meals. Oh, I forgot, the left's line is that it is expensive to "eat right" as if they would do so with more money.

The old line from Margaret Thatcher applies. "Socialism is great until you run out of other people's money." Thieves. Don

The San Andreas doesn't have **** on Oregon. We have something much better. The San Juan DeFuca plate slides underneath the North American plate, just off our coast. When it decides to let loose, and unleash a magnitude 8-9 subduction quake, lasting for five straight minutes, not one brick in Portland will be left sitting atop another brick. The people who prepared (and weren't killed outright) will survive. The liberals will starve to death, or kill each other.

Can you say expense report and other benefits.

Politicians think they are the sharpest knife in the drawer full of butter knives.

What is the company is publicly traded but based out of state (ie Delaware corp)?

I predict an epic fail. Say bye-bye.

Sounds like the San Juan is gonna DeFuca Oregon one day; sounds like you should consider moving.

All those companies have to do is move 15 north to WA State (no income tax). But they won't. People (and businesses) in Portland have a cult like thing going when it comes to Portland.

They are proud of the fact that Portland is deeply liberal, bizzare and eff'ed up.
