Black powder revolver shooting is a lot less of a PITA if you use wonder wads instead of Crisco to prevent chain fires and Hodgdon's triple seven instead of black powder.

A stainless Ruger old Army with an aftermarket 45 Long Colt cylinder is also nice. And the Vaquero model with the fixed sights looks more "Authentic".

I also enjoy my Uberti Rem 1858 and a spare cylinder or two. Spend 5 minutes packing them then shoot for a bit, repeat.

If someone offered me a day of unlimited shooting in which they would supply ammo all day and I could bring any one gun, it would be a 1911. Which 1911 might change depending on the mindset of the day though.

If thinking about the favorite kind of carry gun, it would be a striker fired polymer handgun.

    Interesting.

I picked traditional DA revolver ... just because.

However, in my case it requires context and my "favorite" would change.

I like SA revolvers for their balance and how they allow recoil forces to be handled and managed ... but for "work" I prefer DA revolvers for their simpler and more rapid trigger-cocking capabilities under stress. My choice in snubs runs to the DAO.

For precision in semiauto pistols I prefer 1911's. A slim and well balanced design that has the most straightforward trigger/sear/hammer function. An experienced, thinking man's pistol for serious use.

For an everyday "working" pistol I prefer a traditional double action pistol, also commonly called DA/SA.

My last choice, of which I own several, would be the striker-fired plastic pistol of any variation of "action" (meaning whether DAO-ish or SA). When it comes to exigent, nasty environmental conditions I think there's still something to be said for the extra mass of a fast-moving hammer when it comes to primer cup impact, versus the low mass of a spring-loaded striker firing pin.

These reasons are probably why my safe contains all of the above, and I've spent so many years of trigger time refining my use and appreciation of all of them. ;)

    Thanks for the poll. :)

My favorite “type” is a toss-up between DA/SA revolver and DA/SA semi-auto, and it seems to flip back and fourth.

Today it’s my Sig 224, but tomorrow could be my 19-4 again. Who knows! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I voted black powder cap & ball revolver.

As far as pure fun factor goes nothing beats an afternoon at the farm knocking cans over with my 1851 Colt Navy; shooting round balls with a glorious plume of smoke accompanying every shot.

My striker fired Glocks and M&Ps. I like shooting all kinds of different guns , but really enjoy / prefer striker fired plastic fantastic. Recently got into .45 cal with an M&P45 2.0 and a Remington R1 commander. For me , the M&P shoots and handles better than the 1911 and is a superior gun for me. But I am also a Glock and Smith homer , so there’s that :notworthy:

I picked DA revolver. I get most of my joy shooting outdoors in the woods or outdoor range, usually plinking or bullseye type and longer distance. I like having the two optional trigger pulls, drama free reliability and not chasing brass.
I can expect any of my typical shooters to last tens of thousands of rounds, many of which are already pushing a century in age with no issues. I can load up cheap low pressure lead ammo for comparative infinite barrel wear or hot jhp or hardcast ammo and the gun will run with it the same.
All of them are LE/military proven designs with known effectiveness, will do the job for carry if needed...but as shooters to just enjoy, my favorites.

In terms of selecting a favorite type of action, I think for me the pleasure comes from how much the gun teaches me about what's going on with my shooting process.

There are three choices I would choose depending upon my mood. I chose none but here are my choices:

    SA/DA revolver
    SA/DA pistol
    striker pistol

Go for it. My guess your favorite is the DA/SA revolver :)

Semi auto first. I have basically no interest in revolvers because I’m not a boomer (joking, maybe) but alas..

Striker fire, DA/SA hammer fire and DAO hammer fire in that order

Like others said, it’s complicated....my lack of revolver love is due to pragmatism, I don’t think there’s anything a revolver can do better than a semi, except shoot ridiculously powerful rounds that I have no need for in day to day life.
