This thread just occurred to me as I have spoken to and read of a few officer's and detective's choice for a hideout gun or BUG. I know from my limited study base BUGs have changed and varied over the years as newer and better ammo and gun designs have improved dramatically. Some old standbys never really go out of style.

For instance, I learned some time back that Jacksonville Fla. police at JSO tends to favor the SW 642, but I couldn't hazard a guess about their ammo preferences. In the past, I have heard of plenty of old timers who packed Colt/Browning .25 autos and High Standard .22 Derringers. Colt and SW snubbies, PPK's and PPks. in .22 . and 380 both for "Onion Field" encounters and "New York reloads". One I read of kept a spare .38 snubbie in a ratty old movie theater popcorn box when on a stake out.

I'm not law enforcement and I don't "play one on TV" or on the net either for that matter, but some professional insight on this from professionals may pique the interest of a few of us civilian CCW carriers who carry a BUG.

I have for instance carried my Glock 30 in a cut out book left on the front seat while driving or making a stop back in my bank paper/Rx delivery days. Easily accessed and easy to keep out of sight.

    Your thoughts?

I've used a 442, G26, and P232 as back up guns in a vest holster under the shirt.
If I was working in LE today, I'd probably go with a G42.

I used a 642 with LSWCHP +P 158 grain. Near the end they bought some .38 ammo for back up gun use and we were supposed to use it but it was was some name brand but it was 125 grain SJHP "+P" but it had a muzzle velocity of sub 900 fps. Pretty much same velocity as my stuff but lower weight.

They also issued I think Ranger .380 but I never liked that caliber.

We could carry anything .22 Short and up. Most long term officers carried some J frame or another. The .357 scandium frames sat in lockers because they were too painful to use. Glock 26 pistols became more common due to the mag interchangeability. A few 43 pistols were around. Most people using those just carried them on and off duty.

I was about to carry my compact .45 with my full size 1911 when my ankle gave out. Basically the same thing as a G17/26 combo

I have heard of people trying a Scandium in .357. As one man opined. It was like having the palm of your hand smacked with a baseball bat. And the batter was going for the cheap seats.....

Glad they gave you fine folk a choice! Not everything goes with everyone. J Frames are a long time favorite! I carry mine with commercially reloaded LSWCHP with a soft lead alloy and pinch of extra powder. Girlfriend likes it as her gun now, and isn't put off by the recoil. I put a laser on mine as the stubby little sights are just impossible to line up quickly. Now I just look at the target area and that lovely little red dot is there waiting for me.

I had a Glock 26 but it never took to the extended mags. Perhaps it needed the spacer at the base of the magazine to make it functional.

Thanks for the quick replies and input.

In my law enforcement days I carried an S&W model 37 square butt loaded with Super Vel 110 grain jacketed hollow points as a backup and off duty gun.

As Pocahontas would probably say, it was many moons ago but I also carried a S&W Model 37 (bought it used for $35.00) loaded with LSWCHP 158gr.

I didn't carry a second weapon until after an incident in which I badly needed one. Afterwards, second weapons were S&W 640, later the lighter 642 or S&W 3913. The issued .38 Spcl. ammo was Federal 129 +P Hydra-Shok, 9MM was Remington 115 +P JHP.

Thoughts: Carry whatever you can legally carry and you are comfortable with, in whatever fashion you consider appropriate. There is no one right gun, caliber, carry method, etc. that works for everybody.......

Son is issued a SIG 365 in 9mm. When he had to buy his second gun it was a Glock 27. Later when he quit wearing a uniform his BUG was a S&W M&P in 9mm he carried on right side and his issued SIG 226 in a holster on his vest.

Sig 365XL, about the same size as a S&W Shield, but with 12+1, day/night sights and machined for a red dot should one want one. Sig offers LEO pricing, as does S&W.

While on duty, my BUG was always a S&W J frame snubby - several different models over the years. Ammo changed from time to time, .38 or .38+p.

Issued G22, G27 BUG on vest. At times, a 442, for a pocket.

Issued 180gr Golden Sabers, I have a mag of Bonded GS in the G22, reloads are regular GS. For no reason, at all, the G27 has 180gr Ranger Bonded. The 442 currently has 125gr Golden Saber +P, but I got some Gold Dots to try in it, next time I’m shooting.
