How reliable are pistol length gas system ARs? I'm looking at a good deal on a used aero 11.3" 5.56 pistol build but it's pistol length gas which has me skeptical of it's reliability. I know that short gas systems are for subsonics or less than 10.5" barrels which makes me raise the question.

I have a 7.5” PDW and it has no reliability issues.

Both my 18 inch and 12.5 inch 300 BO use pistol length tubes. Have not had any issues, but they’re relatively new (sub 400 rounds).

My 8.5 inch 6.8 is also a pistol but it’s a piston. Very reliable.

my 5.56 SBR’s have all run carbines.

My 1st SBR had a CMMG Kitty Kat upper, 7” I think, never gave me any issues and I built that back around 2004.

I might be wrong but I think some of the cycling issues were with f/a and extreme short barrels, one of the tricks I heard was to open up the gas port in the barrel. This was back in the mid 90’s when this was mentioned to me. Maybe someone with deeper knowledge will chime in and set the record straight or confirm.

Generally speaking, a pistol length gas system on a shorter barrel, like 10.5 will be more reliable than a carbine gas system. If the gas port is sized properly, you should have a damn reliable shortie
