A while back when reading a thread here on the Ultimate Breakfast someone mentioned the great and historic restaurant chain Sambos. It inspired me to take my wife to the original Sambos, on the beach in Santa Barbara. This is the very first Sambos and since the death of the chain due to political correctness, it is now also the very last Sambos. It is owned and run by one of the founder’s grandsons. Here are some pictures. Yes, breakfast was great! We purchased a couple of coffee mugs, and an original Sambo’s book as souvenirs. I’ll take some pictures of that stuff and post it one of these days.

I figured the PC police would have shut Sambo's down long ago.

I remember seeing quite a few of them when I vacationed with my buddy down south in the early to mid 1970's. I forgot that they started closing. I don't remember seeing them up north here, although they very well could of been around.

LITTLE BLACK SAMBO IS ALIVE AND WELL AND LIVING IN SANTA BARBABRA!

It was one of my favorite stories back when I was a kid... My grandma used to make us stacks of pancakes with 'tiger' butter, 'cause we were sooooo hungry.

It's a shame that "Little Black Sambo" has become the victim of PC. I LOVED that story as a child. Sambo was the hero.

Oh, and the story takes place in INDIA, not Africa.

You can download the story here:

They have a place called Lil Sambos in Lincoln City, OR. Lil Sambos took grief from the pc nazis and had to remove the little brown sambo sign outside of their restaurant.

;f Usually start my evening meals with a salad... ;g perhaps my evening meal should not just start with that salad, but also end with that salad... ;f ;g

Nope. Many Denny's moved into old Sambo's locations when Sambo's went under for obvious reasons; location, location, location.

    :)

Wow, that really brings back memories. We had a Sambos here in Richmond; It was a regular place for Sunday morning breakfast. As a kid I LOVED that place! Didnt know there was still one open down south, gonna have to stop in next time I'm down there.

We had the Sambos restaurants all around Seattle back in the 1970's. When did they go out of business? I would guess early 1980's.

I too rue the loss of Sambos restaurants, but at least the PC Police will never close down Waffle House!

I remember Sambos. But I always liked IHOP better. To me, Sambos, Denny's, Sheri's, are all pretty much interchangeable.

We just did a case study on Sambo's. If what we read was correct they had a bit of a scandal concerning the name but the main reason they closed was because they had to end their method of compensation )(% of profits) for their restauraunt managers for tax reasons. This caused most of the excellent managers to leave and created an atmosphere that was not conducive to a prosporous business.

Don't listen to 'em. Salads are fattening. Too many carbs! But that's a whole other flame war.

I miss Sambos too. I just might make the pilgrimage myself one of these days. Do they have an Atkins-friendly menu?;a
