Wife might buy me a new gun.

Leading choice right now is a Thompson Contender/Encore handgun, scoped, 14" or 15".

    What's the best caliber?

    Main uses:
    1. Deer hunting.
    2. Target shooting (50 to 200 yards).
    3. SHTF sniper ;a

    My top choices, thus far:
    1. .308 (How's the recoil on those full loads in a handgun?)
    2. 7mm-08 (Should be good for deer)
    3. .35 Rem (if in a used Contender)
    4. .44mag (it would match my revolver)
    5. .243 (not sure how I feel about that for deer)

    So, what say you?

I once had a Magnum Research Lone Wolf chambered in 30-06 Springfield. The Recoil was SOMETHING ELSE!;P I would go with the 243 Win or 7mm-08.;)

    1. .44 Mag (I use a 14" Contender in .44 Mag for deer hunting.)
    2. 7-08
    3. .308

Ammo is cheap and easy to find. (surplus ammo)
Very good all-round cartridge. Excellent for deer. Great for sniping (human). OK for varmints.
    Recoil is managable.

Well, at least you guys are in agreement. ;a

It should be the new round .243-308-44-express. And a fine shootin' round it is ;f

Looks like I won't be getting a new gun after all. Instead we decided to put the cash down on a generator. Still a cool toy nonetheless ;c

The new gun will come in a year or two. I'll keep dreaming about it and the best caliber for it. ;c

The 7-08 or 7-30 waters should make a excellent round.

If yer already reloading for the .44 magnum, then get the Thompson in that.

If yer not already reloading, then use your next gun money on a press instead.
