Here I was thinking about setting up a camera, macro lens and lighting in order to get my own powder photo database started. But then I thought, maybe somebody else did all the work and searched the web.

Guess what, the National Center for Forensic Science has basically every powder not only archived but also made the data available to the public.

Now we can easily compare powders from bullet pulls for the cloning of factory loads.

They even list the components, size, lot, date, color, etc.

I bought a digital microscope. Now I can compare all powders with those in the photo database on the same magnification level. No more guesswork.

This was a first test. I can change the parameters to the same levels of white balance, contrast and magnification.

That is a nice link. Great photos with the microscope Crockett!

A few of the items are outdated like Accurate No. 7 and 9. Those photos were probably from the days when made in Belgium. The USA made lots are more of a flattened spherical powder.

Did you go through the entire list? I counted 8 entries / photos for #7.

Nice. Ordering one. Daughter wants to use it for fecal egg counts (equine science class). Yuck.
