From what I'm hearing, it is indeed a mix of people with all kinds of grievances:

I'm willing to bet that the most chaotic group, the folks flipping cars and starting fires, are ANTIFA, and everyone else is likely legitimate Yellow Vest protesters, many of whom likely just want to protest peacefully.

But that's just my guess.

GF and I are visiting France in September (flying in and out of Paris). These riots reminded me that I will be essentially unarmed during our visit (forget about guns, French knife laws are about what you would expect, restrictive). This news did convince me to buy an "Unbreakable Umbrella" tonight. There is a straight handled walking stick version on the way. It will probably rain on us too so we will be as ready as we can for bad weather of all kinds.

You can tell it's a mix of groups because on one hand you have some that are destroying national monuments and some that are guarding them. One of the news networks showed pictures of a group of yellow vests guarding (what looked like) the flame at the tomb of the unknown soldier.

Anyway, most of you old farts on here can remember that there's been protests, riots, and strikes in France all the time in the past 50 years. I don't know that this one contains different participants braving the cold than the last bunch of times this happened? Not sure.

I was at a kegger during my college years in the early 70s. There was a heated political discussion going on around the bonfire so I walked over and listened in. Three frenchies were making an argument about the greatness of France at the time and that it was still a true world power. The Americans within earshot just burst out laughing and the frenchies realized they weren’t fooling anybody. They finished their beers and split with the crowd still laughing at them.
