packing in

    anyone pack into where they hunt? how do you do it and how far do you pack in? our hunting group packs into elk hunt. we used to just put pack saddles on the mules but we found a closed road where we can pull a wagon all the way to camp. i think its about eight miles from where we start to camp. we see very few other hunters and are always into elk. heres a pic of our setup

    I have a couple of older friends around seattle who literally hunt elk from horseback.

    They even shoot from their horses and use the horse to haul back the elk quartered.

    Wonderful Klondike experience!

    having an animal to pack your elk out is the only way to go when you're hunting far from camp in very steep terrain. I don't know what I'd do with out them. it would have taken days to pack my bull that I killed this last year out if we didn't have the mules
