I love Oysters raw on the half shell. But to date have never tried to eat the ones available at my local grocery store. Is this a safe practice? And if not where can one find good raw oysters outside of a restaurant?

I get oysters in the shell from either Kroger or Publix around here. So far I've had no problems. Just give each one a sniff once you get the shell open. If it's funky, toss it.

Someone told me a while back, that if you wnat to eat oysters on the half shell, only buy them fresh, in months that have an "R" in them........the waters are cooller in those months. (Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec)

Agreed. R-less months are bad for oysters. I'd wait until Sept. to buy fresh.
