There are no statutes in NC that forbid a person of the age 18 and over to have a firearm in their possession. Open carry would be considered in their possession.
Concealed carry permits require a minimum age of 21.
A person 18 years old may purchase a handgun in NC from a private individual after procuring a pistol purchase permit from the sheriff of the county of their residence. Some sheriffs place a minimum age of 21 to acquire a pistol purchase permit. This can be overcome with the proper legal action.
