You can legally open carry a loaded handgun in any unincorporated territory that does not prohibit the discharge of a firearm.

You can legally open carry an unloaded handgun in a belt holster anywhere that does not prohibit the carrying of firearms (ie. airports, gov't buildings, schools, etc.) However, be prepared to be stopped and questioned by LEOs.

Open carry permits can be issued by the county sheriff, if the county's population is less than 200,000. The process to obtain an Open Carry Permit is the same as a Concealed Carry Permit.

    CA Penal Code
12031. Loaded Firearm; Carrying in Public Place or in Vehicle
(a)(1) A person is guilty of carrying a loaded firearm when he or she carries a loaded firearm on his or her person or in a vehicle while in any public place or on any public street in an incorporated city or in any public place or any public street in a prohibited area of unincorporated territory.
    (f) As used in this section, "prohibited area" means any place where it is unlawful to discharge a weapon.
    (g) A firearm shall be deemed to be loaded for the purpose of this section when there is an unexpended cartridge or shell, consisting of a case that holds a charge of powder and a bullet or shot, in, or attached in any manner to, the firearm, including, but not limited to, in the firing chamber, magazine, or clip thereof attached to the firearm; except that a muzzle-loader firearm shall be deemed to be loaded when it is capped or primed and has a powder charge and ball or shot in the barrel or cylinder.

Only way you can open carry here in CA is after your graduation at the police academy.

Or at an outdoor range allowing the slide to lock back in your holster.

Your best bet is to call or visit the local county sheriff. They will have the most current info.

Leave the gun in the car if you visit their office!!

You can open carry a loaded handgun: on your own property. Although i don't think i'ld try it while mowing the front lawn. You can open carry in your place of business. You can open carry while fishing (aslong as it's not in a prohibited area). You can open carry while hunting. You can open carry in a national forest (not a national park).

I open carry on national forest property all the time. I've never been questioned or hasseled by any ranger or forset service personal. Even while the Fresno county sheriffs department, CHP and ranger was helping us recover my buddys jeep after he rolled it down the side of a mountain. I open carry while fishing. I've never been hasseled by any LEO or game warden.

Regarding fishing/hunting, you can also carry concealed.

No but i'm in the process of applying. Our new sheriff is very pro gun. I don't need one to open carry in those areas. You just have to know where it's legal.

It's okay for thieves to run around with sigs or glocks invading homes in the bay area, but not okay for us to make sure we are well prepared; even getting into our cars? I've had my neighbors house invaded three times, at 10PM!!! It's been going on all across the bay area...thats why I hate living in CA sometimes. Basically they are letting the law-abiding individuals run around helpless.

It's been my understanding that you need a permit to open carry - the exception being in your residence.

If you live in Riverside County it is not impossible to get a CCW. Get a list of approved classes and the instructors may help you come up with a decent reason.

You need to know the rules to play the game.
    Good Luck

Let me know how it goes. I've been planning on trying myself this year in Fresno County. I was hoping to see Minor elected Sheriff as he was very pro-ccw, but from what you and a few others have said Mims isn't bad herself. If you don't mind my asking what are you listing as your reasons for getting the permit?
