Nobody remembers the start of the 100hr ground war in Desert Storm?
Yup, I was there about where the 24th infantry went across.
I remember that it didn't last long, but my memory of everything that happened is fuzzy. I was only 11. Great job to everyone that was involved though!
I was two months away from starting basic training @ Ft Jackson.
I was finishing up AIT at Leonardwood. It was all we talked about.
I was working at a private liberal arts college when the news came on the radio that sat behind me on a shelf in my office. I stopped everything I was doing and was astonished and amazed at what I was hearing. I was glued to the radio (no internet then). It captivated my attention for weeks.
The ground war? Or the bombardment that started on 1/17/1991?
I was working a job down south of Palm Springs. I was very concerned about what our troops were facing. There was talk of Iraq using chemical weapons against our soldiers. I remember all the fires burning in the oil fields.
start or end... doesn't matter... my unit still had thousands of EPWs to deal with
I remember CNN talking about how tough the Iraqi military was form2 weeks prior. Lol
1st AD, rolling non-stop through the desert, it seemed. Watching the M1A1's destroy the enemy and the fraaap, fraaap sound as the Warthogs were shooting above. Field artillery shooting the MLRS' non-stop. Fun to be part of a armored combat brigade.
Oh, yeah, a lot of this in MOPP4 because of the chemical warfare scare.
I was skiing at Loon Mtn., NH and was pounding them down at the bar when the lifts closed and all the TV's went to it. HH
