Whats up fellas! Its been a while since I've been on board, but let me get straight to the point.

My brother has a guy he knows that wants to sell an old lightweight commander in 9mm. The thing is he is telling him it is very rare, some type early pieace made in the 50's. He did say it has the combat commander markings on it, but nothing really else. No 1911, or 1991A1 markings. The guy wants to sell it to my brother but I've never heard of any lightweight combat commanders that old. The guy even told my brother it was some type of experimental phase at the time, but i'd take that with a grain of salt. The thing is, I dont know. Like I said I've never heard of any early commander pieaces like that especially in 9mm. Also being a lightweight commander I'd assume they were made of some type of alum alloy, and to be honest never heard of anything like that, that old!

Anyting you guys can tell me about it would be much appreciated. Could it be legit? How much could it be worth? etc, etc, etc...

Thanks in advance fellas

If it's aluminum, it wouldn't be a combat commander. The "combat" denotes a steel frame. The first Commanders were aluminum framed 9mm's. The first commanders were made in the early 50's, like 50 or 51. I don't think the steel framed combat commanders came around till almost 70. I'm sure someone will be along with all the details.

If it is a lightweight commander, not a combat commander, have it checked by a knowledgeable gunsmith prior to the purchase for cracks and defects in the aluminum frame. It is not totally uncommon to find stress cracks in the frame.

Tell'em to take some good pics and post it here so that we can examine the gun. But if it were 9mm, then I seriously doubt that it would have suffered aluminum frame cracking.

I would love to own a Lightweight Commander in 9mm or .38 Super. It would be beyond awesome.
