For those of us who have been around since revolvers, sap pockets, and Kel-lites were standard kit; I have a question.

Who still has a badge that says "Policeman" or "Patrolman" on their rank banner? When I got commissioned, I was in the first academy class that had Officer on the rank banner and that was the divider between the old salts and the FNGs.

I know that those badges are highly prized among the few that still have them.

I do, when I retired I made a shadow box of my badges and the two different shoulder patches and badges. The ones I started with and the ones we moved to years later.

My grandfather has his that date from the 60's on; they are all "Detective" or "Sergeant" badges, though. He also keeps them in a shadow box.

I had one issued to me, but had to give it up when I finally got a "real" badge.

I miss the blackjack/sap more than the badge. :)

I miss my sap gloves. 8 oz. of lead powder in a full leather glove that looks innocuously innocent until that first KA-POW! ZOWIE! BAM!

CALEA 165.73-A 568-S2BG (c) I believe mandates that the agency take any badge with the word "Patrolman" or Policeman" and destroy it by placing it in an automobile crusher, then a metal grinder, then melting the grindings then burying the molten slag in lead lined boxes buried at least one feet below ground in an area at least one hundred miles from any dwelling. I think its on page 173.

A guy I worked with prized his Patrolman badge- he started in the mid 1970s and is retired now. I still have a couple shirts with our old Public Safety Department patches, which was two name changes ago.

I still have both of mine, it says "Patrolman" on them. I had to wear one recently when I had to work a week of patrol duty. You should of seen the stares from the jr. officers. I thought it was hilarious, I really never thought of myself as one of the department dinosaurs till then.

My badge says "Patrolman' on it. Back before cameras, portable tape recorders cell phones and all the other Star Trek stuff we live with now-a-days when a disgruntled citizen demanded to know what your name was the standard response was..................... 'Pat Rolman'. Apparently there were a lot of relatives with the same name working on the same department.

Our department still issues Patrolman badges. I refer to myself as officer when I call people to avoid confusion with the highway patrol who calls their rank and file road guys troopers.

I feel like an old guy because I pre-date tasers.

I remember when it was a big thing that my hometown PD got a woman officer.

I pre-date OC. We went through chemical weapons training with CS. I had to get separate certification for OC.
