Excellent suggestions all the way around, thanks folks.

I like this the best. He is so proud of his little Gunny puppy - 5 months old and working reliably off lead, really a good little "show dog."

He invited me into his house, gave me a tour of his man cave, showed off his coin collection. He was especially proud of his son's coin he got for being in charge of Marine 1's security detail.

He is really a stand-up good guy, At 69 almost 70, he has lots of life experiences to share and I'd be honored to hang with him.

He once told me he used to be a powerful man ... I said I'm sure you were, you are a big son of a butch! He corrected me and reiterated it was die to his position in the marines. I never served, but said you were like the general of enlisted people, and he got a grin on his face.

    Thanks for this suggestion

Nope. He drinks a few Miller Lite's but he is a cancer survivor and suffers nerve damage from agent orange exposure. I think he is just really happy that for the first time in his life, he can trust his dog out and about while free.

A framed portrait (photo) of him and the dog or maybe on canvas.

I'd say something for the dog that he would like and use.

I did shoot some pics and gave him a framed 8x10 of Gunny I took the first week of training. I take a bunch of pics with an assistant in the frame for perspective to compare puppy size at start of training and 2 months later. Large breeds grow so fast!

I framed this one for him

    I think I wuv you

You are correct, I'm following @First shot 's advice and spending time with him. He doesn't smoke cigars, drink bourbon. or chase women, so thus far dogs and beer are all we have in common, but we can shoot the **** over his favorite Miller Lite.

Bourbon or Scotch, depending on which way he leans. It may take some research.

Just a thought: You may want to tell him it's for Christmas. At least the timing would be right.

I think that excellent photo is more than sufficient. Don't embarrass the SgtMaj with another gift. It is NEVER good to embarrass the SgtMaj.

I suppose you could use the money to buy the beer or ammo, etc, etc. when you see him.

The other suggestions and comments here are very good.

Na, he didn't make it that high. He was offered to be some generals sergeant major, thought the guy was an ******* and turned it down, and was offered to be the sergeant major of the 2nd marine expedition force (or something like that,) but said he had put his time in the field already so he retired.

I'm growing attached to little Gunny :)

    Correct, you are confused.

Thanks man ... I never feel I deserve to get paid what I do just to get to play with other peoples dogs. I never look at it that way.
