16 year old has been accepted into the CAP nat'l flight academy this summer, meaning at the end of ten days, he will solo. It just now occurred to me that means NO ONE ELSE IN THE PLANE. :puking: :faint:

My solo flight when I was 16 lasted about 10 minutes. Up around and down. No biggie.

Do they still cut the back of your shirt off ?

Mrs. VR, he'll be fine. Think of it this way, would they trust an incompetent kid with a very expensive piece of machinery if he couldn't handle it??

Take lots of pictures. Trust me.

    Good for the lad.

Ask him to buzz the house.
    Have the video camera ready.

I've always wondered. Can people with motion sickness become pilots?

Things must have changed a lot since I got my license back in the early 80's. We certainly didn't solo within 10 days. This must be some kind of an accelerated program using something other than the Cessna-150's our Aero Club had.

Anyway - congratulation to you son, hopefully he will enjoy and expand his flight experience.

That was my thought when I soloed the first time. I got up in the air and realized, "Hey! I'm in here alone!"

    Freaky, but it was ok.

Your son will be fine. They gradually move up to solo. It's not like his first day and they say, "Ok kid. Take it up. If you live, you're in."

I soloed on my 16th birthday. I'll never forget looking over to the right seat and seeing nobody sitting there, and thinking, OK it's up to you.

That's how I got my start Sharon. CAP Solo encampment in Cedar Rapids, IA 1976. I soloed before I got my drivers license.

Sorry, I know that wasn't much help. :tongueout:

He'll be fine. They won't let him go until he's ready. His confidence level will go through the roof. There will be no stopping him after this.

During my time, they just dump a bucket of dirty water on you when you land.
