    Hey Guys-

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of a good handcuff and magazine puch to carry when off duty/plain clothes. I will be carrying a Glock 21/30 in a blackhawk serpa and I was looking for a good quality paddle holster to carry my spare mag and cuffs in. I have the S&W 300P cuffs.

    Any advice...good, bad, indifferent...is appreciated.

    Thanks
    pdelx

Why would you want to carry cuffs off duty?

Some departments recommend or even require you to have restraints if you are armed.

    :wavey:

    I have a nice G&G mag/cuff paddle case.

Yup. Put two of these in the coin pocket of your jeans and I'm covered by policy.

Then go with tuff ties to stay within policy, but a full set of cuffs is a waste of weight and discomfort in my experience. That additional weight would be better served for additional mags. My dept has the "recommend" language in policy, but I do not carry cuffs off duty.

    1. I don't train with tuff ties. I do train with handcuffs.

    2. I'm 6'3" and 230 lbs. They aren't a huge problem for me. If for some reason I don't feel like carrying them on me, there is a pair in my glovebox for each vehicle and a pair in the tank bag on my bike.

I just loop the cuffs through my belt and call it good. A few extra ounces of weigh isn't a big deal. In fact, I like the extra weight on my weak side to offset the weight of the gun.

    I use this Safariland pouch:

    (Model 573)

When I carry cuffs off duty. I only have that particular pouch for single stack .45 mags and double stack Glock 9/40/357 mags. When I carry something else, I keep a couple pairs of Tuff Ties in my pocket.

I used the same pouch for some casual details working armed security, and it's VERY high quality. It's a little bulky, but not anymoreso than the SERPA you're already using.

I have an Aker handcuff/mag pouch that currently is on loan to a buddy of mine. It works reasonably well. I normally carry a spare mag and no cuffs as they aren't required. I normally have easy access to my gear bag where there's a few sets of spare cuffs.

A paddle magazine/handcuff carrier coupled with a paddle Serpa is going to need a pretty oversized shirt for concealment. You might consider a snap-on cuff carrier as is offered by DeSantis and Safariland coupled with a single magazine carrier. That will give you the option of moving two smaller pieces of gear around versus a big, honking paddle carrier that's somewhat mated to one spot.

I also carry handcuffs when off duty. Given my size and manner of dress, they're not a hassle. While I try to avoid off-duty confrontations, they do occur. While I would be unlikely to be handcuffing anyone before the working police got there, I like having the option.

S&M aficionados are never off duty, just in plain clothes.

I use the AKER bikini pull through cuff case. Had it for decades and still good as new. The spring clip is amazing.

I don't carry cuffs off duty. Are you sworn now (if so - congrats) or do dispatchers now have "plainclothes" or "off duty" responsibilities? :wavey:

guess thats a good as answer as any..because I was gonna ask the same question but that answers it. I was thinking..I never carried cuffs or anything but a off duty gun when on the PD...but some departments have different ways of doing things as we all should know :) .

I'll be graduating the academy late April. Haven't been around since I started since I've been pretty busy, so I haven't had time to change my profile status.

I most likely will be using this for plain clothes, but considering it for off duty. One of the guys in my class just got the Safariland 573 and it looks pretty good, so I might ask for that. The only reason why I was asking for advice was because I've been getting asked by parents and friends for gift ideas for graduation.

    Thanks for the help

You're graduating in April and you are already getting a plainclothes assignment? Must be nice.

Oh noes...not the dreaded plainclothes rookie. So what's the assignment? Picking up a gallon of milk on your way home after work? Cutting the grass on your days off? Shopping for new raybans and xtra small t-shirts?
