Sheriff: School officer pawns firearm, brings pellet gun to work

SEFFNER, Fla. - The Hillsborough County sheriff says a school resource officer pawned his service weapon and then reported to work with a pellet gun, instead.

Sheriff Chad Chronister said the officer, Leroy King, who was assigned to Mango Elementary School, has been arrested.

The sheriff said the discovery was made when a supervisor performed a standard, random officer check at the school. The supervisor noticed King was not wearing a holstered weapon and began to ask questions.

King allegedly gave excuses to investigators about why he did not have his weapon, but later confessed he pawned the gun, as well as a ballistic vest and weapon-mounted light assigned to him by the sheriff's office.

"It wasn't being fixed. It wasn't broken. It wasn't left someplace where he was taking target and shooting practice," Chronister said. "He had pawned that school security issued firearm... assigned to him to protect the children at Mango Elementary."

King apparently pawned the weapon and other items six times between the beginning of the school year and the end of November.

King was charged with eight counts of giving false info to a pawnbroker.

"He was charged with the duty of protecting our most valuable and precious resource, and that's our children," Chronister said. "As a parent, I am disgusted that we have an individual that we have spent time training, that our school security system spent time hiring, with one sole purpose, and that sole purpose was protecting our young people."

So, the varying details in some of the available news articles makes it appear that the subject was a security officer employed by Hillsborough County School Security, who was given as the owner of the safety equipment? The Sheriff's office discovered the problem and investigated the security officer?

So, who did the background investigation on this upstanding citizen?

That's way more than Detroit PD makes, nearly double, yet they manage to somehow not pawn their issued equipment.

Don't give them any ideas though.... IJS.

Back in the 1970s a patrol officer I knew hocked his handgun (owned not issued). He then carried the issued shotgun with him until a supervisor saw him making a traffic stop with the shotgun under his arm. He had even carried the shotgun into a 7-11 when he went in to get a cup of coffee. Someone loaned him a revolver until he got his out of hock. The issued shotgun had a 30 inch full choke barrel because the Chief also used it for duck and goose hunting.

I don’t see what the big deal is here. You know, you can put someone’s eye out with one of those pellet guns.....

    Poor math skills.

That whole ”put it in pawn, take it out” routine gets really expensive when you do it over and over.
