I have a strange issue that I've had ever since I installed my spare 40GB drive.

Every time I am accessing the drive for more than a few seconds, the mouse will start to act choppy. It seems like every half second, the mouse will hitch up and then continue on. The choppyness is very evenly spaced, every half second it pauses, just briefly, then will continue to move normally. After the operation on the spare drive is done things will resume normally.

This makes playing games stored on this drive pretty much impossible, because of the choppyness.

I've run scandisk, defrag, etc and no problems have been found.

    It's a 40gb IDE maxtor HDD.

First guess is it's not running in DMA mode.

Assuming you have 2000 or XP:

    Open control panel
    Open System
    Go to the Hardware tab
    Click Device Manager button
Open the tree for IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Double click on the channel that the drive is installed on
    Go to Advanced Settings tab
Set Transfer Mode to "DMA if available", may as well do it on all the devices
    Click OK
    Reboot

Go back to the same place in Device Manager, and see if the "Current Transfer Mode" is "Ultra DMA Mode *" FOr that matter, look for it's current mode before you change it... if it's DMA and still bogs the system down, you may have a bad drive.

Is your mouse USB or PS2?
