WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will change the name of North America's tallest mountain peak from Mount McKinley to Denali, the White House said Sunday, a major symbolic gesture to Alaska Natives on the eve of the president's historic visit to Alaska.

By renaming the peak Denali, an Athabascan word meaning "the high one," Obama waded into a sensitive and decades-old conflict between residents of Alaska and Ohio.....The announcement came as Obama prepared to open a three-day visit to Alaska aimed at infusing fresh urgency into his "call to action on climate change".

So the change finally came, good.

I won't lie to you, I was having doubts it would ever come.

What does Obama mean in Athabascan? The choom gangsta?

Obviously, President McKinley was the most recent Republican president to be assassinated

(although conspiracy nuts suspect Harding's jealous wife of poisoning him).:tinfoil:

This makes me kinda embarrassed to have a Yukon Denali. It's a little strange.

He's not renaming it. We've always called it Denali. Just because the feral govt is finally acknowledging its proper name is nothing new and is irrelevant.

The greatest contribution McKinley ever made to this country was having the courtesy of dropping dead so Teddy Roosevelt could take over.

You can't. I've already named the 1.6gal pots after Owl Gore. You are going to have to dig an outhouse and name it after Obama.

Well, that's a pretty heroic thing if you think about it, I mean, not diving on a hand grenade heroic, but still... maybe mountain name worthy, in some far flung out of the way place, just sayin'.

figured this was coming with the petition to change it last year.

Little disappointed they finally did it though.

But most Alaskans have always used the two names interchangeably, so I doubt it'll ever go away.

His mission is to debase the white man and this country internationally and domestically. He has always believed the west is the oppressor of the rest of the world, and that domestically that white success keeps minorities down. A lot of white people who voted for him agree with him.

Actually it was referred to as Denali when wife and I went there in early 2000s... He may have made de jure what had already been de facto on the ground.

Denali is the native name, but they're both common use up here. Denali is the name of the state park.

Denali was the call sign of the MAC CP at Elmendorf, back in the day. Maybe it still is.
