    Doh ?

With record spending during his administration, Obama finally makes a budget cut.

The Federal Flight Deck Officer (FFDO) program budget is ~$25M per year from the federal budget. The proposed budget cut is ~50% - $12M. This represents a savings of ~0.00008% of the $13.8T budget (If I counted my zeros correctly).

The cost of training/equipment is paid by the Federal Air Marshall Service, but this is only part of the cost. FFDO pilots must take their own time (vacation) and pay for their own travel, lodging and living expenses. Further, FFDO's are not compensated in any way for their role in protecting the flying public.

As we all know, air security is a multi-layered system with a FFDO being the last line of defense for an air piracy attack. At what cost is this last line of defense? The governmental cost is approximately $15 per flight.

Compare the ~$12M in "savings" to just the administrative cost (salaries & "expenses") for the Endowment For The Arts at $27.9M and decide for yourself if this is a "smart" cut.
