    see the actual article here.

Whether you agree with the idea or not, if you are from NY, please contact your State Senator and let them know to put this to a vote. That is all this is. The Senator wants to have the people of NY vote on the IDEA of this, not actually make it happen (yet). In my experience, politicians don't often ask the opinion of the constituents, and allow it to be recorded in an actual vote.

BTW, Sen. Nozzolio is a GREAT guy and VERY pro-gun. I have met him a few times, and he is one of the good guys.

    Good luck with that.

There has been talk of Eastern Washington merging with North Idaho for a new state, and that conversation started around 1887 when Washington applied for statehood. The last bill was proposed in '91, but it fizzled. It comes up now and again, but it'll never happen in my lifetime. Boise and Olympia would never allow it to happen, and I suspect NYC feels the same way.

Sorry for being pessimistic. I wish you and your fellow up-staters the best of luck.

Eastern CA has the same problem with Western CA.

Then there is Norcal and Socal when it comes to water.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more "city states" like NYC or Seattle. Frankly, if Seattle could become a state, I sincerely believe they would.

And this is exactly what I am hoping NYC thinks. As much as us upstaters want to get rid of NYC, I think NYC wants to get rid of us upstaters. I surely hope this gains traction, but I too, am doubtful...

What district are you in? Write your Senator and let him know you want this. It is the only way it will have a chance is if you, me, and every other NY'er pushes for it!

i think it will work out. non-tax paying state burdens should not be telling taxpayers how much to give to them. tax payers should be telling them how much they are willing to give, if anything.

i much prefer that Chicago and its democrat voters sink into the lake, but if they become their own little state, that would be good too

It will not happen. NYC gets 95% + of it's water from sources outside of NYC

Where is he planning to draw the line between upstate and downstate? Does he mean anything north and northwest of of the Bronx ( Westchester, Rockland etc.. ) or further up from those areas? It sounds like a good idea in theory, but as others have stated, I doubt it will go anywhere.

No plan on that right now. All this is for is to allow the people of NY, to answer the question
basically just a quick vote to see f the interest is even there to do this. I would think if this happens, and 80% say yes, separate them, then they will begin work on the details.

He is also my senator. I also know him and he is a great guy. I know my assemblyman even better and he is also a really great guy. The problem is they are entrenched politicians in the most dysfunctional state legislature in the nation. As much as I like both of them, it is time that all the incumbents in Albany be voted out of office. Only by wholesale replacement of these entrenched politicians will NY emerge from the mire of stagnation and dysfunction.

PS the call for the 51st state is about the 20th call during my lifetime. It will never happen. Just another political balloon floated to take focus off the real issue that the legislature in NY has no idea how or inclination to solve the real problems of the state. Splitting the state upstate/downstate will solve the problems of neither.

This has been an ongoing debate since I was a kid. Growing up in upstate NY the question wasn't if NYC should be its own state, it was how best to kick them out of ours!

I'm in favor of a separate Upstate NY.

I don't think it will happen. But I'll vote yes.
