If I want to do SLI, I know I need to get the same type of card, but does it also have to be the same manufacturer? Right now I have a BFG 7900GT 256mb. Does that mean I have to buy the exact one, or can I buy the ASUS equivalent?

I think you answered you own question.

But VFR or Washington would have a more technical explanation.

I don't know all that much about the subject...

But what I've heard is that it CAN work with different manufacturers, but it's not at all recommended.

When in doubt ask the experts.

Originally they had to be the EXACT SAME card, but nVidia seems to have fixed that limitation. My guess is that it would be best to use the same card, same board revision and same BIOS. But it's apparently not required.
