No such thing as FDisk anymore?

    I need to reformat a desktop. I don't have the reformat disc..."FDisk" says unknown command under the current windows xp system. How do I completely erase the computer? Thanks.

    Are you trying to reformat the system volume or an extra hard drive?
    Should be pretty easy to do with the Windows XP cd. Boot from that and format the hard drive when presented the option.

    i personally prefer herins boot disk myself.

    Reformat it UFS, EXT2 or EXT3 and don't worry about it :supergrin:

    fdisk is still a valid command in *nix land :)

    FDISK is a holdover from MSDos days. If you are looking to wipe a machine and then install XP, then boot from the XP disk, allow the setup to run, and when it comes to the partition selection for the install of XP, wipe all partitions and remake them.

    If you have an old DOS disk 6.0 or later, then you can boot from the dos disk, and run FDISK from that.

    That seems like a lot of unnecesarry work.

    Start > control panel > administrative tools > computer management > disk management > delete partition > create new > format

    You might have diskpart.exe available. I know I used it from the cmd prompt to redo the partitions on a recent Vista install.
