Since this country has become a haven for scammers and criminals, no one trusts anyone anymore.

I happen to have a BA in History and am looking for a job. I figured I'd go over to volunteer to do some typing and translating for a local history museum. I don't really like History but want to get out of the house for a while and build up my karma a little bit. I went in and "interviewed" for 45 minutes.

Long story short, I can't do any work there until I provide three professional references. I could do this, but I'm not sure it's worth the hassle to pester my old professors. I'll just volunteer for my neighbor-down-the-street's dog charity instead.

Am I just being a wuss? Or is America extremely uptight these days?

I feel the same way. I feel scammed every time I spend a little cash.
3$ for a two liter soda? 2$ for one out of a vending machine?
And a few days ago I ordered something off of amazon, it turned out to be complete crap although that was slightly my fault but still...
When I go in for a new job and ask if they're hiring it's always no.
This country is out of whack.

I like languages the best. History was my major in college, but I had the most fun taking Linguistics, Spanish, German, and Portuguese classes.

I can't really articulate why I chose History for my major. It was extremely difficult to get the degree honestly. I ended up with a 3.74 GPA but I put in 65 hours/week.

Not only uptight but paranoid and on the verge of cardiac failure from being on such a heightened level of alert all the time. That's my opinion on the matter.

I would volunteer somewhere else. You are donating YOUR time for their benefit. It's not unreasonable to expect them to make a couple of phone calls instead of you having to track down professors to get written references. You shouldn't have any trouble finding an organization that is more receptive to volunteers.

Sounds like they may just be a little overimpressed with their importance in the grand scheme. Find something else to do and let them wait for the next Nobel laureate to apply... ;)

When I was born the nurse leaned over my crib and pinched me really hard and said " never never ever trust anyone kiddo" ........and she was right.
Im not uptight about anything, in fact Im about the most laid back person you will ever meet, but Im not your friend and never will be.
Good luck on the job appointment, just ask them to do it and if they refuse, delete them from your life. You were there and your transcriptions prove it. Those should suffice. Good luck.

Local history museum? I'm going to bet it's a very small time operation with practically zero funding (as most are).

I've never heard of a place like that that will turn away free help. Those places are usually begging people to volunteer so they can get caught up without having to pay someone with their limited funds.

Go to the guy you talked to and explain that you want to do some work but you won't jump through hoops to work for them for free. Give them your contact info and tell them to call you when they get desperate for some help. That might show them you have a legitimate interest without any motives. Does this place get a lot of traffic? If not, they might not need any help and are just blowing you off.

References don't always have to be professional. You can always just give them numbers of people you know so they can varify you're not an ex-con or something.

I also have a BA in history and worked for a short time in the archives department of a local university. They had similar requirements which were understandable. Once working there, I had access to the collections, some items of which were quite valuable. Think part of a Guttenberg Bible, Matthew Brady photographs, etc.
