I would imagine that if this had happened a few years back, the guy and his wife would have been buried under the highway and not living in the middle of it. I doubt that taking a middle of the road attitude like this wouldn't get you very far in the USA?

So they agreed to sell, took the money, then waited til the roadwork had already begun to say "nah, changed our minds, here's you money back"?

    Not much sympathy here.

Contrast with a supreme court decision to allow property to be taken by the government, forcibly if necessary, from US Citizens for purely commercial use.

Sad, isn't it, that those living in "Communist" China have greater private property rights than we do?

In China, you never own the land because it belongs to the people. You get the right to use the land. And depending on usage, your right to use is anywhere from 40 to 70 years. For residential use, it's 70 years. After that, the .gov't steps back in and either grants you another right to use that land (let's grease some palms), or gives you "reasonable compensation" for the structure that remains.

In China, a private individual owning property in perpetuity (want to pass it on to your grandkids? Forget about it!) don't exist!

I'm totally amazed, in comparing the U.S. with China it's hard to believe that we're the free nation.

Here we have the estate tax where the Federal government can take up to 55%.

And then there are property taxes; they keep going up so in many cases even if you pay your property off, the taxes are higher than the mortgage was.

Do you really ever own real estate or are you just renting it as a serf from your lord and master the government?

The two systems of government are converging into State Capitalism.

Yeah, it is hard to believe China's communists are falling behind our own central planners.

Wonder if the Chinese are familiar with "Home Rule"

I've always liked the slogan accusing someone of being a "running dog of capitalists."

I saw that picture in the newspaper, and laughed out loud. Never happen in the USA, and I found that extremely ironic.

In America you never own the land, because it belongs to the GOVERNMENT. You get the right to use the land in yearly increments by paying a tax or fee directly to them. If you fail to pay this yearly "rent" they will use any method necessary (to include violence and force) to remove you from the land .

And depending on their whims, it can be taken from you tomorrow with no regard to "ownership" and then simply given to someone who promises to pay them more taxes than you pay. Regardless of how long you have "owned" the land or whether or not you have paid all the fees and taxes.

Want to leave it to you kids? Hope they can afford to assume the payments. The Government can charge them up to 50-60 percent of the value to allow them to begin the yearly payments described above.
