NJ state trooper finds over $783K in traffic stop

    April 25, 2012, 9:16 a.m. EDT
    AP
FORT LEE, N.J. (AP) — Two men from New York face charges after a New Jersey state trooper found more than $783,000 in their vehicle during a traffic stop.
State Police say the trooper stopped the SUV because it was driving erratically on Interstate 95 in Fort Lee.
The trooper found the money in a box and a hydraulically-operated compartment hidden in the vehicle.
Franklin Delacruz and Jose Tremillo-Carnillo of the Bronx, N.Y., are charged with money laundering and conspiracy. They're each held in the Bergen County Jail on $500,000 bail.
It's not known if the men have attorneys.

So, wait. They found a bunch of money in their car and they're in jail. I must be missing the part where they broke ANY laws of this country. Did they just leave the part of the story out as to how the money was found to be dirty or something? :dunno:

The subjects were charged with money laundering and conspiracy. I won't comment on this particular case, but generally speaking, if a canine reacts to the cash (tainted/narcotics) the money is seized. There are other factors which may be involved as well.

I never bought that line of reasoning by police. Hell, I'll bet the money in my wallet that if you pulled the cash out of your wallet a canine would react to it. Money is dirty. It changes hands all the time. And it often changes hands with drugs.

You don't have to buy it, sir. This has been upheld in the courts, and is a recognized and valid procedure. Until it is challenged again in the court system and overturned, it will stand as legal.

That it will. Hopefully it hasn't already and won't in the future be used to snare one of the 'good guys' before its overturned.

I bet 100% of the members of this site have something 'suspicious' about them. Please, refresh my memory; is 'suspicious' a crime? Should we all be jailed because we're 'suspicious'?

I never said it wasn't suspicious. Simply that its not against the law by any stretch of the imagination to have cash on you. And quite frankly, I hear about innocent people getting hassled over having cash often enough to where its worth making a stink about.

Large money seizures are held on the interstate all the time, and the seizures are upheld by the courts all the time.

Well, it's been around for my 23 years as a law enforcement officer. So I wouldn't look for it to be overturned any time soon.

    Let's get this straight...

...three quarters of a million dollars...
    ...in a trap...
...and there's some doubt about the legitimacy of the arrest and seizure?

    Alrighty then.

Is having 750k in a trap illegal? Please quote me the applicable law if so.

    Thats my point.

They were charged with Money Laundering and Conspiracy, criminal offenses, for which there was clearly probable cause to arrest.

Have you considered the possibility that the officers conducted an investigation that goes beyond the scope of what the article says (e.g. they stopped the vehicle, found the cash, and arrested the men)?

The trap alone is grounds for a conspiracy charge.
