    Good day to everyone. I was going to post this in the photography club threads, but my PC was taking a long time to open the threads because of the picture content, so if you all dont mind, I'll post the query here. I am planning to enter the DSLR scene and I was wondering if you could advice me on the Nikon D40. I have been told that its a good entry level DSLR, and I have even seen the comparisons between it and the D50. However, nothing beats experience, they say, so could you please share your experiences with me regarding the D40? Any advice you impart will be greatly appreciated.:banana:

    I don't have a DSLR, but I'd just like to second your comment about the Photography Club thread taking a long time to load. I thought you guys were just going to post clickable thumbnails of your photos to lessen the drain on bandwidth?

    ganda ng performance ng d40. all of us who bought the d40 are very happy with it. si mcoliver lang ang nag-upgrade kasi madami pera! hahaha!

    problem is, with the high demand, it's almost always out of stock in hidalgo. Goes for around 25k now, its cheaper than most high end point and shoot cameras like the canon ixus is800.

    you might want to check out Digital Photographer Philippines and Pinoy Photography forums.

    there is nothing wrong with the D40, it's a very capable DSLR with low noise output. however ...

    let me just look for my post at DPP and let me get back to you on this :)

    ==================================

    just my opinion . . .

    quite similar to what sir randy is saying . . .

    for those asking D40/x, D50, D80, the fact that the D80 is in your list, it means you can afford it, so go for it.

    for the question of the original poster between D40 and D50, i would say D40 IF you are REALLY REALLY on a budget and IF you REALLY REALLY want to stay with the kit lenses like 18-55, 18-70, and 18-135 or get the all around 18-200VR.

    however, if you eventually thirst for fast lenses, the D50 may be a cheaper option in the long run.
    1) as others have mentioned, you can use the nifty fifty 50mm/1.8 with the D50 and it costs less than 6k.
    2) if you want an affordable macro lens, the nikkor 60mm goes for around 20k. if you had the D40, your option would be the nikkor 105VR which is around 42k.
    3) for mid 2.8 lenses, you could opt for a sigma 24-70 with a D50 which is priced around 24k. for a D40 your options are the nikkor 17-55 or 28-70 which both go for around 60k.
    4) i think the tokina 12-24 is a wee bit cheaper than the sigma 10-20 also.

    please correct me if im wrong re lens selections, this is just what i came up with. just my 2cents

    ========================

    again, there is NO right or wrong in purchasing cameras and lenses. it all boils down to HONESTLY saying what your budget is, and what kind of photography you want to do. will you REALLY stick to kit lenses or eventually be tempted to get fast lenses? oliver and pot found out the hard way:) i'm sharing all these with you guys because I ALSO FOUND OUT THE HARD and expensive way :supergrin: :supergrin: :supergrin:

    Guys,

    Is there any local online store where we can see comparative prices for Canon and Nikon DSLR camera bodies and lenses? It's difficult for guys like me who are in the province to go all the way to Hidalgo just to do a canvass.

    Guys, thanks for your replies. I really appreciate them. May makukuha ako for about P23K. Thats just about mu budget for now. Meron na kasi akong lenses from my old Nikon AF, but don't know if these will work with the D40. "G" yung ending. Most of the literature I've seen on the web say that the D40 will only autofocus on lenses with an "S" sa ending and will manually focus with other lens types. I hope you guys can enlighten me some more.

    sir, what exactly are your existing lenses?

    MALAMANG lang, your lenses wont work with the D40. the D40 needs af-s lenses to auto focus. af-d lenses wont auto focus using a D40.

    PPTS799, wala nga sa list yung lenses that I have. However, I understand that these lenses can still be used however, manual focusing nga lang. Is this correct? Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it. Kahit na hindi pwede, will still buy the camera since most of the inputs I have received point out that its a good buy. Will just probably have to save up for the lenses that will AF with it.

    Thanks, I will! I got it today and just got hom tonight so I will charge the battery first and try it out tomorrow! As for my existing lenses, I'll just keep them for my film camera and save up for the lenses for the D-40! I hope I can get the same good pictures that you guys have taken with your DSLR's!

    D 70 maraming second hand na magaganda dyan. Ang gamit ko D 70s x 2 yrs na. 6.1 meg lang ito . I got the 18-70 mm lens kit and dedicated flash. Ive been a happy camper. All i notice is most pics has a light hue. I have to use contrast in the editing to produce vibrant colors. This usually happens if using the pop up flash and indoor setting. If outdoors on a good day magandang ang balance palagi.
    My sister's Canon digital slr has a more contrasty pics which i like but i got more nikon lenses collected that i cannot give up the system.

    if i'll get another camera now, it will be a toss up bet. the d80 and d40/d40x.

    mas madami ka lens choices kung nasa camera body yung autofocus motor. the d40 and d40x nasa lens yung autofocus motor.

    kaya lang... napansin namin ni gundog na maputla colors ng d80 compared sa d40! and we're very, very happy sa performance ng d40 with the 18-200mm VR combo!

    sir revo, the fact that the D80 is in your list, it means the price is not an issue for you. i suggest you go for it. i love the controls they put in from the D200 and you have a good range of lens selection.

    my .93centavos (lugi na ako sa USD ko )
