Are the standard glock sights on my glock 17 gen 3 plastic? and are night sights metal? and how does the front sight come off, it doesn't slide left and right like most sights i have seen.

The guide rod is plastic on the glock 17 gen 3 does anyone ever have problems with it? Is it worth replacing it for a stainless steel rod? they only cost 25 bucks does it have advantages, disadvantages or is it not important?

Yes. Same as on my G17 Gen4.

and are night sights metal?
My G19 Gen4 came with factory Glock Night Sights. They dont feel like metal. I could be wrong. I'm not sure whether or not after-market night sights are plastic or not.

The front sight isn't dove-tailed in. It's pinned or screwed down.

Field strip your G17. Remove the barrel. Look at the underside of the slide. You'll see the plastic hex pin(?) that stakes down the front sight.[/QUOTE]

I had a G21SF that had a single captured spring on a plastic guide rod. I had no issues with it. I swapped in a LWD stainless guide rod w/spring. I couldn't tell a difference.

If the rear sight has a white u shape they are the polymer sights. The front sight is either staked on or has a screw holding it on. You can tell by removing the slide and taking out the barrel and looking at the bottom of the front sight.

As for the guide rod I have only seen two issues with the plastic one. 1: after a lot of continuous shooting the guide rod seemed to had kind of melted only in the way that it wasn't straight any more. 2: the spring is captured on the guide rod by a plug that is at the front end of the slide. The plug came out and was lost. I would recommend the stainless guide rod just for the rigidity and endurance of it.

Stainless guide rods and extended slide stop levers ( slide release levers) are the first thing I do to all of mine. Feel free to check out my website for the parts available for yours.
