I'm a new member and have already got a lot of good info off of this site!

I've only had my permit a little while and ran into a slight issue last night. On the way to dinner my wife and I had to stop by an open house. Long story short it was a friendly affair and there was a lot of hugging going on. I carry IWB at 8 o'clock and it was slightly nerve racking.

Any insight into the issue would be helpful!!!!

What's the issue? A lot of my family does not know that I carry, and are very "huggy" people. If you think someone feels something, just act like you didn't even notice it and walk away or continue what you were doing. If they ask, then let me know that it is your right. But if you blow it off and act like nothing happened, they'll forget about it.

Could not agree more the longer you conceal the less of an issue it will be because you will be lees self concious of it.

When you hug, you have the option to have your arms higher or lower than the other person's arms. Always hug with your arms by your waist, thus forcing the other person to hug your shoulders. At least have your gun-side arm by your waist.

Emoore is exactly right and one of the first things I learned 14 years ago when packing at church. Always go for the low hug, of course some will surprise you but we live in a day of cel phones, PDA's, Ipods, diabetic pumps etc..... Most people wouldn't give it a second thought. A good place to check out is www.defensivecarry.com

Unless that person is shorter than you. Way shorter, then you dont have a choice.

Aside from trying to position yourself so someone won't feel the firearm or pretending to not notice if someone does feel it there is one thing you can do.

You can be honest and polite when they ask you about it. If they say what is that, tell the truth without acting like it is something to be nervous about...more in the manner of acting like it is a normal thing that everyone does.

If you are friendly enough with a person to hug them then I don't see the issue with telling the truth.

keep your elbows tucked in tight and hug only with your forearms.

Most people dont have a clue. They might think its a cell phone or something. Nobody knows I carry...in many cases my wife has no clue. She still thinks I have one gun!

Tell em it is your "colostomy bag" harness. They'll never hug you like that again. Of course that will also start interesting rumors among all your friends and family.

    +1

I've never had anyone detect my carry gun in a hug.

Now a normal bump in the crowd or a 6 year old nephew running head first into your side, then they know something is there.

I've found pocket carry works well at church.

Yep  Keep your elbows in close and no one will ever feel it. My wife always has to ask if I'm carrying, and also still thinks I have just one Glock. Limits me to owning just black ones vs. a couple in OD I'd like, but works just fine otherwise!
