The new wal mart store in West point does not carry rifle's or shotguns, the old one did. the new one does sell ammo.

Noticed as a trend in southern Alabama too.

Old = yes. New = ammo only.

It's by design. Walmart is easing out of the business.

Around here (Vicksburg) the cashier working the gun section is ALWAYS out from behind the counter messing around among the shelves or talking with friends or something.

So you can never just walk up and buy ammo or guns.

And, of course, they hide the handgun ammo under the counter---like it's a porn magazine or something.

You have to track them down and beg them. And they act like it's a pain to help you.

And you ask to see all the .40 S&W or .22 or whatever ammo; and they rummage around a while and set a box on the counter.

When you ask, "Don't you have any other?" they grimmace and find one more kind.

That's it. Don't ask them about anything else.

In truth, they do have one lady who is very helpful, but she is hardly ever there.

I think Walmart wants to be able to declare that guns and ammo are losing money and put clothes or something in that floor space.

K-mart did that just before they filed bankruptcy and closed most of their stores.

There are two Superstores in Hattiesburg. The one on 98w is on a regular basis #1 in gun sales in the country, yes-country! The overall sporting goods dept. is the same. I have known the mgr. for many many years, and yes he has the awards on the wall to show it. That being said, the new local Gander Mnt. at MSRP is really hurting everyone else in town. :dunno: Go figure!

I don't see how Gander is hurting business they are so over priced there in hattiesburg. I lived behind it on forth street and they were selling Glocks for 700.

I did venture to the Walmart and they were always out of WWB 9mm on 49.

I can't explain it, but I do know that they are out selling everyone else in town-COMBINED. It makes no sense at all, and it is really strange that they make Big Buck look like a good deal.

I can't believe that about Gander Mountain. There ammo/gun prices are outrageous. Maybe some folks just like being able to say 'it came from Gander Mountain.' I don't get it. I work to hard for the few dollars I have to do something like that.

My friend, I can't explain this! I have seen it though. What my eyes saw, and what made sense did not add up. People don't do their homework, don't know, or don't care. I Damn sure don't know. :dunno:

The KMart in Columbus still has guns/ammo but no one around to get them for you.

The Walmart, circa end of 2000 has guns and ammo.

    Louisville's Walmart is ammo only.

L J, Kmart here was never much on a good day, and then they folded like a bad hand of cards. NRA Guy, river crest is not until this weekend- right?

Yep. K-Mart suffered from bad management. All their buggies were always sitting around blocking the aisles full of stock to be put out.

They had like 15 checkout places but they always closed all but one checker. You always had to wait in line to get checked out.

The death blow was when they started trying to sell groceries. Nobody ever bought groceries at K-Mart.

Their gun sales were pitiful. Near the end, I tried and tried to buy some ammo that I could see. But it was behind a locked glass door and nobody could be found working in the area. Finally, I found a salesperson but nobody in the store had a key. I went home and called the manager. He didn't care (obviously.)

    K-Mart also mistreated their employees.

Yeah. Mississippi River crest is this Friday. The fall will be slow.
