The best .22 conversion currently available is the Advantage Arms. Problem is finding one. Usually sell at $$225 to $250
The good news is Tactical Solutions announced they will be introducing their version this Fall. Problem here is they plan to retail them at $450+

so my best bet would to just spend the money on .40 ammo or reloading my spend shells instead of a .22 conversion.

Not necessarily. You can reload the 40's & save, you can convert to 9mm & save, you can pick up an AA .22 LR conversion and save.
It all depends on which resolve you see as advantageous? I like them all. Don't give me another reason to buy a gun (or accessory).
