Ok, it’s not new, but new to me. I placed a low ball bid on a Series 70 Colt on GunBroker. I forgot about it and a week later got an email saying I was the proud owner of a used Colt 1911 for $600. With shipping, ffl transfer and Wisconsin’s ridiculous $10 handgun background check fee (it’s just a sneaky tax, really), it ended up being about $700.

But I think it was still a good deal. Not a safe queen, just used but not abused.

At the range it shot like a dream. Has a very nice trigger.

I’m happy. I need to take some pics and post them.

it definitely is an older one and not if recent production. Does it have a collet bushing? My original Series 70 MKIV does.

I know this is Glock Forum but, I'm a big Colt 1911 fan boy! Although, have other brands of 1911's too.

I'd always just had 80 Series until I got my Colt Competition last fall. I can't believe the difference. Nice score fer shure!!

A reasonable buy but kind of odd.
It has the "billboard" slide of the early Mk IV Series 70 but the blue trigger and checkered grips of the later guns. And what to do about that GI thumb safety?

Nice and a large roll mark one. I think Colt went to the smaller roll marks about 1976 or so. For what it is worth the collet or "finger" barrel bushing lasted into the Series 80 pistols. I have a couple GCNM MkIV Series 80s made in 1988 that have them and I assume Govs made that year would also.

Nice catch! Love me some Colt 1911. Got a new one, but would really like to find a nice older example:

I’m wondering if it’s sort of a Frankenstein gun. Some mix and match parts? For the price I’m not worried.

the grip panels look like they were replacements. They look like a few pairs that I got from CDNN a few years ago with Colt medallions.

the GI thumb safety was probably original from Colt. They have ran low on the other kind of thumb safety and used the GI safety instead. I can’t imagine a previous owner swapping it in for any sort of performance improvement.

You might be surprised, my FLG prefers the old small square safety and if Wiley Clapp likes it, how can you go wrong?

I can work with either of the small thumb safeties, and either of them are my preference over the extended thumb safety.
