Is there any place to find a new production Kar98k that still resembles the old design? I know Mauser still makes them, but they replaced the stock with a sporting version that makes it look like just another hunting rifle.

If anyone knows of a gunsmith that might do it, I could probably convince myself to come up with the extra money that would cost as well.

Just buy a surplus one. If you want a new stock get one from Boyd's. If you want a new barrel get a new one and have a gunsmith put it on. Not that difficult to do really.

That seems to be the only option, though I didn't really want to subject a piece of history to that kind of wear. I suppose that's what it was made for though.

Also it'll feel more than a little strange going out to shoot with something covered in Nazi stamps.

    This is a 'byf43'.
Cole Distributing - Kentucky. $219.99+ shipping.
    (Didn't look like this, though!)

I've got another one, an 'ar41'. I also have a .30-'06 barrel that is the same contour as the original 7.92x57mm barrel.
They will be mated and unless you look at the caliber designation, you can't tell that it's not 'original'.
