Hi all. I'm new here and I just wanted to ask a few questions about my brand-new Glock 19 Gen 3. I've had handguns most of my life but this is my first ever Glock. I've been in love with the 19 since the first time I held one. The size and ergonomics just seem to fit me perfectly. I had a chance to shoot it yesterday, and I had two things occur that I was wondering about.

The first thing is that I noticed a few times after a shot, the slide didn't seem to be closing all the way forward on the next round. I could take my thumb and push the slide closed about an 1/8". The funny thing is, it would still fire even if I didn't push it closed. I was shooting Winchester white box 115gr. and Federal 115 gr. (both in FMJ).

The second thing was the way it was ejecting spent brass. I had several come straight back and hit me in the head.

I should mention that the gun wasn't cleaned or lubricated prior to shooting it this first time. Straight from the box and loaded up. Could either of those issues be a result of that? Also, I was being very careful not to "limp wrist" the gun, so I really don't feel like that was the problem.

Any ideas or tips for a new Glock owner? Thanks in advance!!

that's interesting. usually if the slide isn't in full battery the weapon won't fire. As for the spent brass coming straight back, that's rather a common problem with the latest models. I would send it to glock and tell them about your problem.. Sucks that it happened on your first glock.

Yeah, it was a little strange that the gun fired without the slide being 100% forward. It was only a fraction of an inch, but still. After yesterday's range trip I cleaned and lubed it well. I'm going to see if it's still doing either of those things on my next shoot. If it does, I guess I'll contact Glock. I'll be dissapointed if it comes to that. The whole reason I chose a Gen3 over a Gen4 was to avoid the issues I had read about.

Howdy and welcome. I almost always clean and lube a new one before shooting but didn't always and many will tell you they don't. That said, a couple drops of CLP on the frame rails might have been all that was needed on the out of battery issue. Also, if you had taken the slide off prior to shooting, you want to make sure you have the guide rod seated properly.

I would clean and lube and go shooting again. If it all works great, then great. If not, you will have eliminated a variable under your control and can proceed to troubleshooting the less obvious.

Other tip. Don't be in a hurry to try and make the Glock 'better' with all kinds of aftermarket 3rd party parts. Least not till after you've owned and shot it awhile.

EDITED TO ADD: Oh, just re-read where you said it would fire out of battery. Okay, that's weird.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm looking forward to hanging out here and learning alot about my new Glock.!
I thought that was weird too, but it's not like I could see the round in a partially open chamber or anything. It was just slightly back. I could tell that when I pushed on the back of the slide with my thumb it went forward a little. The next time I noticed it, instead of pushing it forward I just tried pulling the trigger and sure enough, it fired. :dunno:

As for the brass smacking me in the head, yeah...I hope that stops. It hurts!

My Gen 3 G19 would shoot brass to my face at least 1-2 rounds per magazine. I was able to solve it 99% of the time with an LWD extractor. You might want to give it some time before doing that. I went through 600 rounds with no improvement so I made the switch. I've put around 1300 rounds plus since my LWD extractor and I've had one piece of brass to my face with a few over my head.

I would be more than a bit nervous that if your gun fires out of battery a substantial failure could occur that might damage the gun and/or someone near it. I wouldn't fire it again until someone checked it. But I can be a bit cautious.

Please excuse my ignorance on the subject, but what exactly is an LWD extractor? Where would I get one if I need it? Is it something I could do myself? Expensive? Thanks!

It's an aftermarket extractor made by Lone Wold Distributor's. Do a search and you'll see plenty of info on it. It doesn't always solve everyone's brass in the face issue. I still say give it some time, shoot the gun quite a bit and see how it performs after 500 rounds. Of course your other issue seems a lot more concerning.

Got it..thanks. As far as the other issue, I tried something tonight and I'm currious if anyone else's will do this too: With an unloaded and safety-checked gun, I pulled my slide back just the slightest little bit and held it there. If I pull back too far, the gun will not dry fire. But if it's back just a tiny bit, it will. And when it does "fire" it pulls the slide forward. It's hard to duplicate like that, but I think it's pretty close to what I saw at the range. I had said earlier that it might have been about an 1/8" but I think it's more like a 1/16".
