I think I need a shorter front sight. My new 17 Gen5 shoots about 2.5” low at twelve yards. I read where someone replaced the front sight with a .180. What do you think?

Where does it hit at 25 yards? Most of my pistols hit a bit low at close range, probably because the bore is below the sights. If it is significantly low at 25, I’d would look at sight height. You could replace the rear easier than the front.

Oh, also a different load may bring up your POI. Perhaps try a heavier bullet weight.

have you tried different ammunition? Point of impact can be greatly effected by what load your running.

With my G19Gen5, I replaced a taller (I think it was .200") Ameriglo front sight with a .180" version (Ameriglo "Agent" sight set). This got my POIs to what I wanted at ~15 yards. I don't shoot much at 25 yards. (I shoot a variety of ammo w/115, 124, or 147 gr. bullets.)

Prior to that, my stock plastic G19Gen5 and G17Gen5 sights were .165" front and a 6.1mm rear. I had replaced those 6.1mm rear sights with 6.5mm (which was the standard rear sight height for the Gen1-Gen4 9mm Glocks).

Todd, it will help if you state what sights are currently installed.

Factory-installed Ameriglows raise POI by decreasing front sight height.

Factory Glock OEM sights raise POI by increasing
rear sight height. On Gen5 pistols with GMS sights the elevation will be indicated at the bottom of the sight notch. On all other Glock OEM sights it will be indicated on the sloping right side:

6.1mm above sight dovetail bottom = Dash Under Bar
6.5mm above sight dovetail bottom = Bar
6.9mm above sight dovetail bottom = Dash Overr Bar

Todd, regarding post 7, Mike is asking what height is your rear sight (now that we know you've got the stock Glock Gen5 "GMS" plastic sights)?

From what I've read, so far, in this thread, you'll want to go up two steps in Glock's rear sight heights.

For example, if you've got a 6.1mm rear sight, then you'd go up to Glock's 6.9mm (#39734) rear.

But if you presently have the 6.5mm rear, then go up to the 7.3mm (#39735) rear.

I'm staying away from ammo differences or choices right now.

I've replaced the sights on all my Gen 5's, but I believe they came with 6.5's.

Isn't 6.5mm the stock height or can new Glocks come with different heights?

Are you shooting from bags or standing? Many things can cause this.

Agreed. Shoot from sandbags at your desired distance to remove you from the equation...

All previous generations and models of Glock 9x19mm pistols (except fixed-sight G17L) have been supplied with 6.5mm rear sights. But for some yet unexplained reason, Gen5 pistols have been supplied some with 6.5mm sights and some with 6.1mm sights. Many whose Gen5 pistols had 6.1mm sights found POI to be well below POA and corrected that by replacing the 6.1mm sight with 6.5mm. That is not too surprising.

    As L-2 suggests, your Gen5 G17 needs a 6.5mm or 6.9mm rear sight.
