Picked up a new Glock 23 Gen 4 last week and after my second visit to the range I have a total of 250 FMJ 165 and 180 grain, plus a number of self defense loads through my new gun and it has functioned flawlessly. Not sure if Glock requires any type of break in but I could not be more satisfied with my 40 S&W, my new every day carry. Not sure of the self defense load, I’ve shot Winchester PDX1 165 and 180 grain, Remington Golden Saber, and Speer Gold Dot. They all grouped about the same and I have no trouble with follow up shots.

G23 Gen 4 my new best friend.

    frankr,

Congrats on the new G23! That was my first Glock I picked up back in 1993, and I still have it and shoot it.

Good to see that all is well for your new Glock.

Congrats! My G23gen4 has been perfect as well. And compared to my gen3, I think the dual recoil spring really does dampen the recoil.

Just picked one up myself, Frank. That is excellent news for me since I haven't had the time to try mine out. I have picked up a few rounds of different sorts and look forward to seeing how she performs. Congrats on yours.

Have both, by happenstance, both the Gen3 and Gen4 23. Neither have failed. Gen3 is a LEO tradein, Gen4 is store-boughtened brand new.

Nice pick up, the Win, Speer and Rem are all good choices for self defense.

Is there a difference in the grip thickness between the Gen 3 and the Gen 4 without the back strap?

I don't have calipers, but the Gen3 feels _marginally_ slimmer.

Just used a piece of paper to measure around both grips right at the trigger guard. The Gen3 appears to be right at the same size as the Gen4, or maybe a millimeter or two less, depends how you measure. But no significant difference.

this is good to read. I plan on this being my first handgun purchase in the upcoming weeks. I have been debating between the G22/23. I plan on carrying this gun, and based on alot of people that carry currently, the G23 is the better choice.

The Gen4, without a backstrap, is 2mm shorter (front to back) than the gen3. I find the difference to be quite noticeable.

Of the rounds that you mention, go with the Golddot. HST, Golddot and Ranger T are all street proven. 180 grain in HST and Golddot. 165 grain in Ranger T is awesome. I have heard that Gold dot 165 grainers sometimes don't expand. Google these rounds on Youtube for videos of actual ammo testing in gel.:tongueout:

Grats on the 23. I just picked up a few boxes of Critical Duty. (9mm and .40 S&W.) Monday at the range I ran some through my 19 and was really amazed. It was very low recoil, low flash and for a +P it proved to be reliable and accurate in my 19. The testing data looks promising for this load.

The G23 is an excellent choice and I can see that you are going to enjoy it. The G23 was my first Glock also and remains as one of my favorites. You are wise to choose the G23 in that it is better for a carry gun than the full size Glocks. My G23 is loaded with Winchester PDX1 165 gr. Bonded JHP. Speer Gold Dot would also be a good choice for self defense.
