Haven't bought new carpet in years so I'm looking for some advice on what to look for as far as quality/installation/pad/pricing in terms of getting the most for my money.

I'm doing the whole house and we have kids, one still 4yrs. so wear and tear, spills etc. are part of the equation.

    Thanks!

I you had real wood or laminate or tile you'd still have same floor and not have to change every 5 years or so. Cha-ching!

I think the carpet color you're looking for is called "dirt". If they don't have that, find the closest thing to it.

The rest of the world uses tile and throw rugs.

    Don't skimp on the padding.

I'll second this. I would still put carpet in the bedroom but anywhere else is really pointless.

Saying that in my prior post. We did wood on our first floor which I would recommend, but carpet in bedrooms, just our preference, as it's just me and the wife. Get good stuff, do research with what makes a good carpet.

    Hardwood.

Carpet is nothing more than an expensive dirt trap.

Just make sure it matches the drapes...

On the first floor we do have tile, wood and carpet in the LR. When I said "whole house" that includes the bedrooms and the hallway/stairs.

I only have pre-carpet advice: Ban shoes in the house well before you purchase the carpet. Let the idea get ingrained so you don't have absent minded mud-tracking-on-new-carpet.

A word about wood floors - especially the laminates. If you have dog(s), know that their "toe nails" will make a LOT of noise as they walk/run around on the wood floor. I put laminate down in the living room (13X20) and ended up taking it up a week later due to the noise... Ceramic tile is your friend if you have kids or pets... If carpeting is a must, dark colors show dirt a lot less...

Avoid shag carpet like it went out of style 30 years ago.

Even as health conscious as people are these says you can still find it for some odd reason.

See if you can settle on something with a stain barrier. Some carpeting prevents bleed through to the padding.

And, as said above, don't skimp on the padding...it's the most important part of carpet feeling good.
