I went to a site mentioned here to get help picking a digital camera.

    It said I would like:
Canon PowerShot A95 Canon PowerShot S70 Canon PowerShot S1 IS Canon PowerShot S60 Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20K
    selling from: $319 $449 $369 $409 $549 *

The panasonic looks great but do I really need all that gee whiz? Yes I would like it, but can I justify it?

The Cannon A95 intrigues me. seems a very well thought of camera.
The S1 IS seems nice too but bigger?

any thoughts if between these cameras?

    Thanks.

hint: I am leaning towards Cannon

Damn, you can get A95's for $319!

Pick that baby up, unless you want to get a smaller "pocket-size", less powerful (but not by much) camera in the S60 or the Digital Elphs.

I might be narrowing in on my camera.

    Cannon Powershot S410
    Cannon ELPH SD300

they both seem like what I want with a slight edge going to the S410.

What is it that you're looking for? Image quality or pocketability?

both actually. ease of carry and the best pic I can get doing that. I am partial to Cannon these days also. The SD is a bit smaller than the S410 but not by much but seems to report a bit better resolution.

I have searched for a yr. It is about time to decide on one already!

OK, but why over the S410 or S500?

I may be prone to agree, but just wonder why you say that

All three cameras are so close the only major differences are that one has an extra megapixel (but 4 is plenty for printing up to 8x10) and the SD300 is not only the smallest, it also has a 2 inch LCD compared to a 1.5" LCD of the other two.

Here is a side by side comparison of all three.

And here is a review of the SD300.

    http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canonsd300/

The SD300 gets dpreview.com's "Highly Recommended" seal which isn't given lightly. This camera takes excellent pictures. I think you would be quite happy with it.

i have the cannon s410 and absolutely love it. for the size and quality, its great. you really cant go wrong with it. i also have a couple digital slr's...but guess which camera goes EVERYWHERE with me. the s410. its great. plus, pelican makes a very small waterproof/crushproof case for those backcountry adventures.

    i use the pelican 1010 micro: http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=1010
you can also purchase a foam insert. you pluck out the middle pieces of foam to create an exact tight fit for your s410. mine has been everywhere, including floating next to me while swimming a slot canyon in Zion Natl Park.

Other than the S410 being a tad cheaper, I don't understand why it is such a major decision. The SD300 has a larger CCD, a larger LCD, a selectable 9 point or center auto focus, a 2cm closer macro focus (actually just close focus, but they use macro incorrectly for point and shoots), unlimited burst shot (only limited to your cards ability), about 60 grams lighter (you said size was a factor) and the highest rating the best internet review site is capable of giving. It's a no brainer in my opinion. Did you read the review and comparisons I posted?

but I have held the 410. It is a known quantity so far. The SD300 I have yet to find in stock anywhere around here to hold in my hands.

I may end up with that sd since I really thought the 410 lcd window was a tad smallish. Means smallish text for my not-so-great eyes.

I will look at the review again.

I read the review again. "recommended" is not the same as "Highly Recommended", so no; the SD300 did not get the highest review. Unless you listed a site that wasnt the one you were referring to?

I like the SD and may get it, may get the S410 or S500 also. I will get one of them I guess soon. I have too.

I spent a whole year looking at cameras and studied them to death. In the end I didnt have a camera.

I am convinced the camera you have is much better than the one you almost bought!

I love the A95, got it for Christmas. I find something new to do with it everyday. The controls are simple to use, but allow for a lot of control over how the pictures turn out. Not to mention, the camera comes with some great photo editing software. ^c

How did you know? I was handling an A95 the other day whist looking for an SD300. Didnt find the SD but really liked the 95!

Unless lightning strikes I may have decided now on a camera!

I'm thinking I'm going to get the wife the SD300 for V-Day. The 410 is a little cheeper but the 300 uses the SD cards and her lap top has a built in reader for SD cards so I figure that's worth another $50. Target has the SD300 for $350 right now.
