If you live in the dry western states it will serve you well. If you live in a humid area or this is a heavy duty use weapon there are going to be issues. So like Coyote said you have to stay on top of it.

You will see a light rust color coat on the weapon. This is surface and wipes off easy. Keep the outside of the weapon oiled and wipe off any finger prints. Stay on top of it or there will trouble.

My 870 express tactical is at the Rem. factory now to get the barrel & receiver refinished. I have the polycoat finish that was flaking off in chunks. good news is they're calling it a warranty job. Bad news = its been there for 5 weeks with no ETA yet.
I wish I never bought the gun. Even though it always functions, all the paint peels off.

Which 870 finish is most durable?

I have a regular 870 express from walmart and if your finish is anything like mine, it will scratch and rust easily.

Keep that finish oiled with a light coat. I also agree that the blued finish is most durable, although it looks cheap (IMHO).

Cerakote is probably the best coating you can do besides parkerizing. I ended up going with gun kote just because they are local and I ha some issues waiting on Cerakote. I've been really happy with fun kote and have not had any problems whatsoever. I use my shotgun daily for work and the finish is really holding up. Where are you located?

I finally got my 870 Express Tactical back from Remington after @ 7 weeks. They refinished the receiver & barrel as a warranty job, even though it was beyond the warranty period. They put the same powder coat finish on as when new, and it looks good, except for the stamped area had rust on it when I opened the box (see pic).
The CSR at Rem. first told me it was my problem, and Rem. has never heard of a finish issue with the 870. I asked for her Supervisor, who told me another story, and set me up with a shipping label and set up the warranty work.
Thanks for the advice aippi - you know your *****.
